There’s one instinct in labor that changes everything: laboring down.

Hitting 10cm doesn’t always mean it’s time to push. Your body continues to work, and your uterus keeps moving baby down even without your help. When you wait for that natural urge to push, you give your body (and your baby) the best chance for a smoother birth.

That means less tearing, less exhaustion, fewer interventions, and a shorter active pushing phase.

Here’s what the research actually says 👇

In a study of over 7,600 births, those attended by midwives had lower cesarean rates (8.9% vs 15.2%) — even when factoring in mixed-risk pregnancies. Midwifery care was also linked to fewer inductions, fewer operative deliveries, and lower rates of severe maternal complications.

So no, midwives do not equal riskier outcomes. They’re for women who want evidence-based, individualized care that respects the natural process of birth, and still knows when intervention is truly needed.

The takeaway? When birth is supported instead of managed, outcomes improve.
