January is cervical cancer awareness month 💙 Cervical cancer is largely preventable, yet it still affects thousands of people each year.

Routine screenings like Pap tests and HPV tests can find changes early – often before cancer develops. The HPV vaccine also plays a key role in prevention.

This month, we’re raising awareness about the importance of screening, vaccination, and early detection to help protect the health of our communities. WVU Cancer Institute

PCH celebrated a significant milestone in pediatric and inpatient care today with a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of its new WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s unit.

The newly renovated unit features five dedicated private pediatric patient rooms, with infrastructure in place to expand to seven rooms as community needs grow. In addition to the pediatric space, 9 adult private rooms on the unit were fully renovated, enhancing comfort, safety, and the overall patient experience for patients of all ages.

The pediatric unit reflects our comprehensive, continuum-based pediatric care model supporting children from emergency care to inpatient hospitalization, to local pediatric follow-up, with access to WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s subspecialists through telemedicine when advanced expertise is needed. This integrated approach ensures families can receive high-quality pediatric care close to home, while remaining connected to the broader WVU Medicine system.

The opening builds on PCH’s formal affiliation with WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s, announced in May 2025. Through this affiliation, PCH is expanding access to pediatric specialty expertise, care coordination, and clinical support strengthening services across the entire pediatric care continuum while keeping care local whenever possible.

“This unit represents more than renovated rooms, it represents our commitment to families in this region to provide specialized, compassionate care for children right here at home,” said Karen Bowling, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital. “Our affiliation with WVU Medicine Children’s allows us to combine local care teams who know our community with access to pediatric subspecialists across the state so families don’t have to choose between convenience and quality.”

The unit’s design also highlights local connections through curated artwork. Animal photography featured throughout the pediatric rooms was created by Kim Ayers, a retired pediatric nurse originally from Wyoming County. Landscape photography throughout the unit was captured by Rick Burgess, a Charleston-based photographer known for showcasing West Virginia’s natural beauty.

The opening of the WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s Unit is part of PCH’s broader strategy to modernize facilities, expand specialty access, and ensure children and families across southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia can receive high-quality care close to home.

Our Story

In 1970, Princeton Community Hospital opened as a 156-bed acute care general hospital with 13 physicians and 125 employees. Since then, we’ve grown into a southern West Virginia leader in medical care, with 267 beds, 160 doctors and 1,097 employees. We recognize that as our community continues to grow, so does our responsibility to keep its citizens healthy. With that goal in mind, we’ve made continual advancements that benefit our patients every day. We’re a regional leader in joint replacement, for example, and have invested well over $1 million in minimally invasive surgery and joint replacement technology. We’ve tripled the capacity of our Day Surgery Department. We’ve also added our Women's Center, which offers family-friendly birthing suites, secure nurseries and a private setting for women's diagnostic services. For those reasons and so many more, Princeton Community Hospital is the center of health care in our community – reliable, dependable, always accessible and ready when you need us.
