Today, we gathered to mark a meaningful transition as we honored the history of the former former laundry facility and looked ahead to the future of cancer care in our region.

See below our President and CEO Karen Bowling's comments:

“Thank you for joining us today. I’d like to thank our partners, Lusk Disposal Service, SWOPE Construction and Stantec.

“I’d like to thank the PCH board for their leadership, and our colleagues at the WVU Cancer Institute for their partnership.

“And I’d like to recognize our providers who are here today – thank you Dr. Baisden for being here - and our staff from throughout our hospital who care for our patients during their cancer journey.

“As we gather here today, we’re marking a transition - one that calls for both reflection on our past and anticipation for our future.

“Before we look ahead, it’s important that we recognize what stood here before.

“This laundry facility was built in the 1990s, during a time of growth for Princeton Community Hospital as we expanded how we serve our patients and our community.

“At its peak, this was a highly advanced mechanical operation - state-of-the-art for its time – operated by a team of up to 20 dedicated individuals.

“This laundry facility featured an automated system that could wash, dry, and fold up to 3,000 pounds of linen every hour with precision.

“It was an impressive industrial operation with large, complex machinery. But what made it truly exceptional were the people.

“People like Marvin McClanahan and Wilma Wade, who are no longer with us, led this department with pride and dedication.

“And the team members who worked in this building understood that their work mattered.

“Not in small ways, but in ways patients could feel every single day because clean linens provide comfort. They provide dignity. They are an essential part of the healing experience.

“So today, as we are preparing to take this building down, we do so with deep respect - for the work that was done here, and for the people who made it possible.

“But today is about more than a building.

“It’s about transformation.

“It is about a new era in cancer care taking flight.

“This site - right here where we stand - will become something new: a comprehensive cancer center that will change the future of care in this region.

“A place where patients will receive life-saving treatment. A place where families will find hope.

“A place filled with light, where new machines - state-of-the-art for OUR time - will detect cancer earlier, diagnose it more precisely, and treat it more effectively than ever before.

“While the technology will be new, our future cancer center will be built on the same dedication to doing things right. And the same pride in the details.

“The people who once worked in this building cared for this community in quiet, essential ways.

“And now, on this very ground, we will build something that carries that legacy forward - expanding it, elevating it, and transforming it into a new era of care.

“So today is not an ending.

“It is a continuation.

“A continuation of service.

“A continuation of commitment.

“And a continuation of our promise to this community that they deserve the very best care, close to home.

“Thank you to everyone who helped write the story of this place.

“And thank you to all of you who will help write the next chapter.

“And with that, I’d like to invite our partners from Lusk to begin.”

These thoughtful packages will help provide comfort and distraction for children during what can often be a stressful experience.

Our Story

In 1970, Princeton Community Hospital opened as a 156-bed acute care general hospital with 13 physicians and 125 employees. Since then, we’ve grown into a southern West Virginia leader in medical care, with 267 beds, 160 doctors and 1,097 employees. We recognize that as our community continues to grow, so does our responsibility to keep its citizens healthy. With that goal in mind, we’ve made continual advancements that benefit our patients every day. We’re a regional leader in joint replacement, for example, and have invested well over $1 million in minimally invasive surgery and joint replacement technology. We’ve tripled the capacity of our Day Surgery Department. We’ve also added our Women's Center, which offers family-friendly birthing suites, secure nurseries and a private setting for women's diagnostic services. For those reasons and so many more, Princeton Community Hospital is the center of health care in our community – reliable, dependable, always accessible and ready when you need us.
