🦠 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common but potentially serious respiratory illness that affects people of all ages. Cases in our area have been trending higher, making awareness and prevention especially important right now. Each year, RSV leads to thousands of hospitalizations nationwide, including an estimated 17,000 hospital stays and more than 250,000 emergency department visits among adults, many with underlying health conditions. RSV is also one of the leading causes of hospitalization in infants.

👶 Who is most at risk?
RSV can be especially dangerous for:
• Infants under 12 months, particularly those born prematurely
• Adults age 65 and older
• People with chronic lung or heart conditions
• Individuals with weakened immune systems

Symptoms can range from cold‑like illness to more serious complications such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, breathing difficulties, and hospitalization.

✅ Prevention options are expanding. RSV vaccines are available for certain adults, maternal vaccination can help protect newborns, and preventive antibody treatments are available for eligible high‑risk infants. Everyday steps like frequent handwashing, cleaning high‑touch surfaces, masking when appropriate, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals can also help reduce the spread.

Here in Central Appalachia, food is more than a meal, it’s a tradition and a connection to our heritage. Generations of families have shared recipes and cooking practices that reflect the heart of our region. From heirloom vegetables and home-canned preserves to cast-iron skillet cornbread and foraged favorites like ramps and morels, these food traditions tell a story of resilience, resourcefulness, and deep cultural roots. 🌽🍞

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and building healthy eating habits that support overall well-being. 🥗

If you need support in making healthier food choices, talk with your physician about a referral to one of PCH’s registered dietitians. Our team can help you honor the foods and traditions you love while finding balanced, nutritious ways to support your health and lifestyle. 💚

Specialty Diabetes Care Arrives: PCH Opens New Endocrinology Clinic

PCH has opened a new endocrinology clinic to address a critical need in the region - improving access to specialized care for diabetes and other hormone-related conditions.

The clinic uses a blended care model that combines local, in-person care with the expertise of academic specialists from WVU Medicine. Day-to-day care is provided by Stephanie Hamilton, PA-C, a full-time advanced practice provider specializing in endocrinology. She is supported by WVU Medicine endocrinologists through telemedicine, allowing for ongoing collaboration, specialty consultation, and coordinated care.

In addition to this continuous, virtual physician support, the clinic offers monthly in-person visits with endocrinology physicians, expanding access for patients who require complex evaluation or physician-led management. Visiting physicians include Dr. Nadia Barghouthi, a board-certified endocrinologist trained at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and Dr. Christopher McCartney, board certified in internal medicine/endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism who earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi.

The PCH Endocrinology Clinic will serve patients across the hospital’s 10-county service area and is open to new patients by referral from a primary care provider. Patients currently traveling to Morgantown for endocrinology care may transfer to the new clinic for more convenient and more frequent visits.

“Managing diabetes effectively can truly transform lives,” said PCH President and CEO Karen Bowling. “It helps prevent serious complications such as heart disease, vision loss, and vascular problems. The earlier patients receive the right care, the better their long-term outcomes.”

For more information or to schedule an appointment, patients should contact the PCH Endocrinology Clinic.

✈️📚 Dr. Steven Stefancic recently spent time with the team at the HealthNet Aeromedical Services base located at the Raleigh County Memorial Airport, providing an educational session for flight crew members and medical staff.

During the visit, Dr. Stefancic presented a lecture on decompensated heart failure, helping providers better recognize and manage this critical condition in emergency situations. The session also included hands-on learning using ultrasound to review important aspects of anatomy, including pediatric anatomy, and practical training performing Pediatric FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) exams.

Opportunities like this strengthen collaboration between healthcare providers and emergency transport teams, ensuring patients receive the highest level of care when every second counts.

Our Story

In 1970, Princeton Community Hospital opened as a 156-bed acute care general hospital with 13 physicians and 125 employees. Since then, we’ve grown into a southern West Virginia leader in medical care, with 267 beds, 160 doctors and 1,097 employees. We recognize that as our community continues to grow, so does our responsibility to keep its citizens healthy. With that goal in mind, we’ve made continual advancements that benefit our patients every day. We’re a regional leader in joint replacement, for example, and have invested well over $1 million in minimally invasive surgery and joint replacement technology. We’ve tripled the capacity of our Day Surgery Department. We’ve also added our Women's Center, which offers family-friendly birthing suites, secure nurseries and a private setting for women's diagnostic services. For those reasons and so many more, Princeton Community Hospital is the center of health care in our community – reliable, dependable, always accessible and ready when you need us.
