Look at the latest statistics about youth smoking. Some highlights are that youth who start smoking in their teens can become more addicted to ci******es and can have effects of impaired lung growth and lung function. Picture your child. He eats his broccoli—after some urging, of course—and drinks milk daily, gets ten hours of sleep, and couldn’t be more excited about the recent goals he scored for his soccer team. Now picture your child using a to***co product.

March 23, 2012 The Massachusetts Department of Public Health found that for the first time, use of alternative to***co products is outpacing cigarette smoking among teens. To***co companies are luring teenagers to start smoking with kid-friendly to***co products, like ci**rs that look and smell like candy but are just as dangerous as the real thing. The flavorings in the ci**rs are a big draw, but experts say the real problem is that they are so much cheaper than ci******es. Some stores sell ci**rs for as little as $0.50, which is a lot easier for a kid to come up with than the $8.00 it costs to buy a packet of ci******es. The city of Boston is taking action; the sale of ci**rs was outlawed back in February. However, undercover cameras found several convenience stores that are still selling them.

This Day in History
January 11, 1964 Surgeon General of the United States, Luther Terry, publishes a report on the adverse health effects of smoking. While not the first official study relating to***co consumption and health hazards, it was certainly the first to have any significant impact on how society would view the dangers of smoking. The report was released on a Saturday to keep to a minimum the inevitably bad reaction of the stock market to the news that lung cancer and chronic bronchitis are causally related to cigarette smoking. It also suggested links between smoking and emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and other types of cancer. Compiled at the request of President John F. Kennedy, the report also recommended “appropriate remedial action” to warn the public of the dangers of to***co smoke. By June 1964, the US government had ordered the to***co industry to print health warnings on their products. Meanwhile smokers across the world became aware of the risks they were taking.
