As Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month continues, we wanted to share this video. Often times, people hear "what if . . ." and assume that people with disabilities must always be protected. But what happens when protecting people turns to limiting their opportunities and taking away choice?! Dignity of risk is about the basic human right to make your own decisions, to take risks, to live a life you choose

Happy Birthday to US π We are so excited to celebrate 56 years of services and supports! It all started in an abandoned schoolhouse in Malden. There were 7 individuals, 3 staff, and a $35,000 budget! Today, we serve a 3 county area, provide supports to nearly 200 individuals, employ over 120 staff, have 3 separate locations, and operate on a $7.7M budget. Empowering People, Enriching Community. It's what we do

Our humble beginnings started in 1970 in an abandoned schoolhouse in Malden, Illinois. Staffed with a crew of 3, 1 program, and $35,000, Gateway Services was born. Currently Gateway has 7 programs, approximately 115 staff, 3 office buildings, a mechanic's garage, and 6 residential homes.
In 1978, our first home was rented to provide 24 hour residential supports. Today, we have 6 CILA homes, 1 of which is owned by Gateway Services, and 5 are rental agreements between a landlord and the individuals who live there.
Prior to 1989, transportation was Gateway-specific. Today, BPART consists of Gateway as the lead administrator and 3 partner agencies (St. Margaretβs Hospital, Bureau County Senior Citizens Association, and Putnam County Achievement Services). In FY20, the BPART system logged over 600,000 miles, providing nearly 65,000 rides!
In 2007, our day program expanded from the Princeton location to include an office in Henry to better serve individuals from eastern Bureau, Marshall, and Putnam Counties.
2017 saw the beginning of Open Doors Community Counseling, a community mental health program. Located in Perry Plaza (and in Henry as of 2019), we are currently seeing adults and children aged 5 and older with Medicaid only.
We have seen many changes since the 1970s; however, we share a common goal of ensuring a high quality of life for everyone.
