A recent study reported 61.8% of women suffer from urinary incontinence yearly. That is nearly 72,000,000 women! 37.5% had stress urinary incontinence, 22.0% had urgency urinary incontinence, 31.3% had mixed symptoms. The cost yearly has spawned a billion dollar industry for pads. Thankfully there are other options outside of pads, embarrassment, and silence.
Yesterday, Dr. Lingenfelter (Brandon M. Lingenfelter) with Medtronic implanted the first Altaviva implant in West Virginia and the WVU Medicine Health system at Princeton Community Hospital. Thank you to the medical staff, Missy May, and Karen Bowling for helping bring this device to the area and working to improve treatments in southern West Virginia.
Altaviva is a small implantable device the size of a memory stick that can decrease urinary urgency and urge incontinence. 80% of patients reported their condition had improved with 70% of patients experiencing clinically meaningful improvement in quality of life and 61% reporting atleast a 50% reduction in their symptoms. Best of all, it is done under local, so no general anesthesia!
