Today we share with heavy hearts that we have lost someone incredibly special to our Helping Hands family, Leland Wayne DuBose.

Leland played a meaningful role in helping build our clinic from the ground up, not only as a supporter of our mission, but as Lacee’s dad. His kindness, steady support, and belief in what we do left a lasting imprint on our team and the families we serve every day. He was the kind of person who showed up, gave generously, and made a difference without needing recognition and we are forever grateful.

In honor of his life and the impact he had on so many, we have created the Leland Wayne Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund will help provide therapy services to children and families who need support, continuing the legacy of care and compassion that Leland embodied so well.

We will miss him deeply and carry his memory with us in the work we do each day. 🤍

Benefits of a calming corner 🤍

A calming corner gives children a predictable, safe space to work through big emotions, practice sensory strategies independently, and reset their bodies.

The goal is for it to feel positive and preferred — not a punishment. ✨ Build it into your routine with 1–2 consistent times each day so it becomes familiar and successful.

Keep it simple.
Too many items can be overstimulating. Rotate items every few days if you’re using it consistently.

3–4 items per day is ideal:
• 1 tactile (fidget, textured fabric)
• 1 auditory (calming music, sound machine)
• 1 visual (books, visual calm-down cards)
• 1 weighted (weighted lap pad, small weighted stuffed animal)

Intentional setup = more effective regulation support 🤍

What is co-regulation?
Children first learn to regulate their sensory and emotional systems through caregivers. As they grow, they gradually learn to regulate on their own.

👩‍👦 Using a parent as a regulator may look like:
• Intense separation anxiety past age 2
• Always gravitating toward one caregiver
• Needing lots of touch or redirection when upset

🌱 Learning to regulate independently looks like:
• Asking for help
• Saying “I feel sad. Can you help me?”
• Using strategies like deep breaths, hand pushes, reset time, or swinging

💡 Ways to support self-regulation:
✔ Use predictable, validating language
✔ Encourage children to express feelings
✔ Create a simple list of calming strategies
✔ Build a daily calm time (5–10 minutes of quiet sensory play)

Helping children understand their emotions builds confidence, resilience, and lifelong coping skills. 🤍
