🧠 The ‘Why’ Behind the Way: The Four Functions of Behavior
Behavior is not random—it serves a purpose. Understanding why a behavior happens is the first step in teaching more effective alternatives.
Most behaviors fall into four categories:
• Attention: seeking interaction or support
• Escape: avoiding something difficult or uncomfortable
• Tangible: gaining access to a desired item or activity
• Sensory: meeting an internal need or feeling
When we understand the function, we can respond in a way that truly helps the child succeed.
