ABCs of ABA: M is for Mand 💬

A mand is a type of communication where a child requests what they want or need — like asking for a toy, snack, or help. Teaching mands is one of the most powerful ways to give children control over their environment and strengthen meaningful communication.

ABCs of ABA: L is for Latency ⏱️

Latency is the time between when an instruction is given and when the behavior begins. For example, if a therapist says, “Clap your hands,” and the child claps after 3 seconds, that’s a latency of 3 seconds. Measuring latency helps us understand how quickly a child responds, so we can tailor supports and encourage faster, more independent responses over time.

ABCs of ABA: K is for Key Reinforcers ⭐

Reinforcers are rewards that motivate children to learn and practice new skills. These can be tangible, like a sticker or toy; social, like praise or a high-five; or activities, like a favorite song or game.

💡 Why it matters: The right reinforcer makes learning fun and encourages children to stay engaged. By observing what motivates each child, therapists can tailor their approach so skills are learned more quickly and with greater confidence. Key Reinforcers are a simple yet powerful part of helping children succeed in ABA therapy.

ABCs of ABA: J is for Joint Attention 👀➡️👀 Joint attention happens when a child and another person focus on the same object or activity together.

✅ Example: A child looks at a toy, then looks at their parent to share the experience.

💡 Why it matters: Joint Attention is a critical skill for social development and communication. It helps children learn to interact, share experiences, and build meaningful connections with others. At our centers, we encourage joint attention in a variety of activities and settings to make learning natural and engaging.
