We understand that our patients basic needs must be met before they can focus on their health. Our health centers provide food bags to patients with food insecurities during their office visits. Our outreach specialists assist in connecting patients to resources such as food pantries, utility assistance, housing and much more!
Food for health is not new to Community Health Centers (CHCs). They’ve been leading this work for 60 years.
One of the earliest examples dates back to 1965, when Dr. Jack Geiger at the nation’s first rural health center recognized that addressing hunger was as essential to health as prescribing medication. This principle still guides CHCs today, even as programs and models have evolved.
Across the country, CHCs are integrating food into care through medically tailored meals, on-site farms, and strong partnerships with food banks and community organizations.
NACHC’s new blog post highlights powerful examples from Illinois to Hawai‘i, and introduces our Food for Health Ecosystem, a roadmap for integrating nutrition into care in sustainable, community-centered ways.
