In honor of Volunteer Month and as we celebrate 50 years of HopeHealth Hospice, we’re proud to share the story of Barbara Brown—an incredible volunteer whose journey has spanned nearly the entire history of our organization. 💙

For over four decades, Barbara Brown has been at the heart of this work. Her journey began at a time when hospice care was just getting started—when compassion, dignity, and comfort were still new ideas in end-of-life care. What began as a deeply personal connection soon became a lifelong calling.

From typing mailing lists on a manual typewriter to answering phones and offering a comforting voice, Barbara has touched countless lives. Even after retiring, her dedication never wavered—she continues to serve as a volunteer, bringing warmth and kindness to patients and families when they need it most.

“I knew I couldn’t always help directly,” Barbara shares, “but I could always find someone who could.”

Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can make. It’s about people, connection, and compassion—and the incredible role volunteers play in making it all possible.

Thank you, Barbara, for 45 years of unwavering service—and for being such an important part of our 50-year legacy. If you'd like to join our epic volunteer team, visit HopeHealthCo.org/VolunteerToday

Sandra didn’t set out to become a hospice nurse.

A little over a year ago, she was caring for both of her parents as patients at HopeHealth. It was one of the hardest times in her life—but also the moment she realized something really important: she didn’t have to do it alone.

There was a team there. Supporting her. Guiding her. Showing up from day one.

That feeling stayed with her.

When she went back to nursing, she knew she wanted to give that same sense of relief to other families.

Now, she’s often the first person patients and loved ones meet. And in just one visit, you can feel the shift—stress softens, questions get answered, and things feel just a little more manageable.

Sometimes it’s hugs. Sometimes it’s tears.
But most of all, it’s relief.

The kind that reminds people: you’re not alone in this.

If this kind of work feels meaningful to you… it probably is.

As Social Work Month comes to a close, we’re sharing this reflection from HopeHealth Chaplain Denis Lynch recognizing the work of our hospice social workers.

Reflection — Social Workers Month
By Chaplain Denis Lynch

This month we recognize the work of our hospice social workers. It’s a role that can be easy to underestimate until you stop and look closely at what the day actually involves.

Social workers often find themselves holding the wider web of what life looks like around that illness — the family dynamics, the practical realities, the financial worries, and the emotional strain that illness brings into a household.

There are the practical realities: helping families navigate benefits, paperwork, and the constant search for resources that might make a plan workable. The ongoing process of arranging the right level of support — sometimes including the time-consuming work of determining a facility level of care and completing the paperwork that goes with it. Finding ways for someone to remain at home when that is their deepest wish, even when the logistics feel nearly impossible.

There are the transitions — the difficult decisions about when home is no longer safe, the transfers from one facility to another, and the coordination and phone calls that most of us only see the final result of.

But much of the work is quieter than that.

It is sitting with families who feel guilty that they cannot do more.
Listening to sons and daughters who feel they are failing a parent when, in reality, they are doing everything they possibly can.
Helping people finally say out loud the fears they have been carrying on their own.

Social workers walk with patients as they struggle to come to terms with a diagnosis that has changed the direction of their lives. They sit in that difficult space between hope and realism — between what people hope for and what is actually happening.

And they do this while holding an extraordinary amount of complexity — practical, emotional, financial, and relational — often all in the same conversation!

It’s not easy work.

I have witnessed (Fran) doing this work day after day, time after time, for my seventeen years here. I’ve worked closely with (Jayne) for many of those years as she balances the complex and often competing duties that come with supporting patients and families through very difficult moments. And just yesterday I watched Keith in a home helping a very emotional and agitated family hold things together in a moment that could very easily have come apart.

In hospice we often speak about the importance of the team, and rightly so. But anyone who has watched a skilled social worker at work knows that much of the steadying presence in difficult situations comes from them — quietly helping families find their footing when everything feels uncertain.

In hospice we witness many kinds of care, but the work of social workers reminds us that sometimes the most important care is helping people carry what feels too heavy to carry alone.

Today is Doctor’s Day — a time to recognize the compassion, expertise, and dedication physicians bring to their communities every day.

At HopeHealth, we see the impact in the way our doctors listen, lead, and care for patients and families through life’s most challenging moments.

Because of them, care goes beyond medicine — it becomes connection, trust, and support when it matters most.

Join us in thanking our physicians today and every day.

At HopeHealth, we know care is about more than treatment—it’s about understanding the whole patient.

In a new op-ed, our President & CEO examines how The Pitt captures this shift, with insights from Leah McDonald, MD, on the growing impact of palliative care in emergency settings.

We’re proud to share a meaningful moment from our team 💙

Recently, Christina Cummins, RN, Patient Care Manager, led a special training session for our dedicated volunteers, teaching them how to provide gentle hand massages to patients at the end of life. This simple yet powerful act of touch can bring comfort, connection, and a sense of peace during such an important time.

Our volunteers continue to go above and beyond, offering compassion in the most heartfelt ways. We are so grateful for their commitment—and for leaders like Christina who help equip them with the skills to make a difference every day.

Today is HopeHealth’s official 50th birthday! What better way to celebrate than with something sweet? 🍪💙

President & CEO Diana Franchitto visited staff across HopeHealth today, sharing anniversary cookies and celebrating the people at the heart of our work. It was a chance to pause, connect, and recognize the everyday moments of care that define who we are.

These 50 years are made up of countless moments of care and connection — all made possible by our incredible team. We’re so grateful to celebrate this milestone together.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Lindsey Demell 🌟

Lindsey Demell’s journey to volunteering with HopeHealth began with a simple act of kindness. When a neighbor lost her husband of 51 years, Lindsey was there to support her. Witnessing that loss—and the importance of compassionate care—left a lasting impression. It also inspired Lindsey to find a way to give back.

Now a Psychology student at the University of Rhode Island, Lindsey volunteers her time to help others navigate some of life’s most difficult moments. She recently created an adaptive, inclusive art therapy program for patients at St. Antoine, giving them a creative outlet for expression and connection.

Patients also look forward to visits from Isla, Lindsey’s Boston Terrier, who joins her for pet therapy visits that bring comfort and smiles. And through HopeHealth’s virtual young adult grief group, Lindsey helps create a safe, supportive space where people can share their experiences and feel less alone.

Originally from Maryland, Lindsey now calls Rhode Island home with her husband Brian, who serves in the Navy, and their pets—Boston Terriers Louis and Isla, and a Ragdoll cat named Violet.

We’re grateful for the compassion, creativity, and heart Lindsey brings to our community. 💙
