Today, March 30, is National Doctors Day, a time to celebrate and honor our Brown University Health physicians and physician partners in all their many roles, as scientists, leaders, educators, innovators, researchers and most of all, caregivers. Physicians have an outsize impact on our lives and communities—helping children thrive and grow, healing bodies and minds, saving lives or bringing new lives into the world.

In honor of our physicians, and as a gesture of our gratitude, Brown University Health has arranged for the Rhode Island State House dome to be illuminated in red and white, the Doctors Day colors.

A patient treated for a heart attack returns to the emergency department weeks later with chest pain.

Doctors determine that another hospital admission is necessary.

But under a recent insurer policy change, the hospital may receive no payment for the second stay if it occurs within a newly expanded 30-day readmission window.

Hospitals must still provide the care, but reimbursement can be denied entirely.
