Custom sapphire optics built to handle the toughest environments are now available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, RI.

These sapphire lenses and windows are ideal for demanding tools like blood-gas monitors, centrifuges, and other precision medical and industrial instruments.

Meller Sapphire Lenses & Windows are extremely durable, optically clear, and resistant to chemicals. They transmit light from the UV range all the way to 4.7 microns — up to 85% without coatings, and more than 99% with specialized coatings. Because sapphire is a Mohs 9 material (second only to diamond), these optics offer outstanding scratch and wear resistance.

We can manufacture these parts in a wide range of shapes and sizes to meet customer requirements:

• Lenses or windows

• Flat, stepped, concave, or convex

• Round or square profiles

• Mounting holes and slots available

Each optic is built to spec and can range from 0.25” to 10” in diameter and 0.5 mm to 1” thick. We also offer scribed directional arrows for alignment. Precision tolerances include:

• Flatness to 1/10th wave

• Parallelism to 2 arc-seconds

• Surface finishes below 0.5 nm

Designed specifically for Beckman® and other high-speed centrifuges, Meller Sapphire Centrifuge Cell Windows feature a scribed arrow on the edges to indicate the optic axis, making installation and alignment straightforward. They are optically clear, mechanically durable, and resistant to etching, fogging, degradation, and extreme centrifugal forces.

These windows are manufactured with tight tolerances to ensure proper sealing and alignment within the centrifuge cells. They measure 19.03 mm in diameter (±0.03 mm) and 5 mm in thickness (±0.10 mm). The windows are offered plano, with chamfers measuring 0.35 mm x 45 degrees at two locations, and have a 30-10 scratch-dig surface finish. These sapphire windows are available in nearly any configuration, up to 10 inches in diameter, and can be shaped to suit specific needs. Boasting a Mohs hardness of 9—second only to diamond—they provide exceptional durability and protection for cameras and sensors. The windows are as clear as glass, offering broad spectral transmission from UV (270 nm) to IR (4.7 microns), and are capable of withstanding harsh conditions such as sand and high-speed particulates, enhancing visibility in challenging environments.

Built for resilience, Meller Large Sapphire Windows feature flatness to one-tenth wave in the visible spectrum and less than 2 arc seconds per inch in parallelism. They are finished with scratch-dig ratings ranging from 60-40 to 40-20, depending on size and design.
