Got Gout?
The holiday season and cold weather can trigger flare ups.

Gout attacks are very painful. They are caused when uric acid accumulates in the joint and crystallizes. This most commonly happens in the toes.

Foods that are high in purines like red meat, cheese, shellfish, wine, and beer.

Gout can be treated with diet change, medications, increase in fluid. Sometimes, we go in surgically to remove the gouty tophus or repair the joint, like you see here!

involves the study of the body in motion. Biomechanical orthotics are prescription inserts made from neutral foot position casts. University Foot & Ankle Center Physicians send the casts and clinical information to a professional orthotics laboratory, where an evaluation specialist reviews the casts and prescription. A staff doctor oversees the evaluation in the form of a "second opinion." Then a production clinician takes responsibility for fabrication and quality control of the individual prescription. The fabricated orthotics are sent to your doctor to dispense with instructions to the patient. Orthotic treatment may be combined with other forms of treatment, such as injections, medications, physical therapy or surgery.

Your feet are a thriving ground for various microbes, most notably fungus. The nails on your toes are the most vulnerable spots. The area between two toes is less vulnerable but still a concern. The most discomforting reality is the fact that fungus can live on in shoes, from flip-flops to work boots. You may not even realize this but you would be actually infecting the person you are sharing your footwear with.
So remember: Shoes are a personal Item and sharing is a NO!

Wearing ill-fitting shoes make it more likely your kid will experience foot problems, pain, and even deformities as an adult. Poorly made shoes, or ones that don’t fit well, may also cause issues with walking, posture, back pain, and more.
The best shoe materials are natural ones, particularly leather and canvas. These are durable, flexible, and breathe well. They soften and stretch over time, too. Pairing a good pair of shoes with some orthotics might be the best option for a lot of people

Don’t attempt to self-treat painful foot woes. Any pain, redness, swelling, or discoloration that persists should be checked out by a podiatric physician. Usually the problem can be cleared up with prescription medicine or a minor in-office procedure. Allowing a doctor to take a look will help prevent minor problems from becoming major ones!

Orthotics may require a gradual break-in period. They are worn in 95% of all walking or standing activities. You may need to wear orthotics indefinitely, depending on how your foot function responds. Orthotics have a variable life span, depending upon your activities. You may need periodic changes in your prescription as your foot function changes.
