When 16-year-old Mark Butler began work at Rhode Island Hospital as an environmental services housekeeping aide, he had no idea he was setting off on a path to build a career in healthcare. Mark took advantage of a flexible schedule to work while he pursued his undergraduate degree in healthcare administration, and today he leads a team as a supervisor in central transport. In recent years, he's also earned two master's degrees and aims to continue on the career path he started in high school.

Take your family to work day looks different for every family, but for healthcare professionals, their families rarely get a glimpse into their daily work. The Perioperative Services team at Rhode Island Hospital recently hosted a Family Day, a hands-on event that brought the operating room experience to life. Through interactive stations and live demonstrations, family members were able to follow the patient journey from pre-operation to recover and gain a deeper appreciation for the teamwork and precision required for patient safety.

“Family Day was more than a tour,” said Alexander Cohen, MD, medical director, peri-operative and procedural services. “It was a celebration of the people, collaboration, and culture of safety that define perioperative care at Rhode Island Hospital.”

Thank you to our Perioperative Services team for hosting this event!

At the Injury Prevention Center at Brown University Health, experts are helping parents correctly install car seats and offering free assistance. Project coordinator Mike Chappell said children are the most vulnerable passengers and noted that studies show three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the ages 1 and 13, which is why properly installing car seats is critical, according to federal regulators.
