Sometimes the second Yoga Sutra is translated as yoga is the “cessation of thoughts” or that you need to achieve a complete “stilling” of the mind for it to count as yoga.
But if you’ve ever tried to meditate (or even just sit on your mat quietly), you might notice that it’s really hard to get the thoughts to stop completely – and even if the mind-stuff does pause, another thought eventually pops in.
In the understanding of this Sutra in I AM Yoga, we use a much more immediate interpretation – that every time we WITNESS the mental modifications (mind-stuff), that itself is the practice of yoga.
I invite you to join me (Janie Ganga) for my monthly event Wisdom & Chill at Santosha Yoga – live via Zoom. This class combines Wisdom (Sutra 1.2) and Chill (yoga nidra). I use the Translation and Commentary of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda as a starting point. I’ll share insights from my teachers in the I AM Yoga (Integrative Amrit Method of Yoga) tradition and my own lived experiences. And then I’ll facilitate an interactive conversation with the group about how we might apply this Sutra in everyday life.
For the second half of the class, you’ll lay down and get comfy for I AM Yoga Nidra – a fully-guided meditation for an integrative experience of NOW.
