My doctor says I have a thyroid nodule. Should I see a surgeon or thyroidologist?

I recommend seeing a surgeon if you want to have surgery. As a thyroidologist, I receive many referrals (often self referrals) for a second opinion when a patient has a thyroid nodule after the patient was told that they needed to have surgery. These patients are often (not always) candidates for RFA, radiofrequency ablation. This is especially true in the setting of autonomously functioning thyroid nodule(s) or thyroid nodules that have been biopsied and been found to be benign.

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness month.

Did you know that thyroid cancer is very treatable? In fact, thyroid cancer is one of the most readily treatable malignancies and has a very low mortality rate.

The most common form of thyroid cancer, papillary thyroid cancer, is usually not very aggressive and as my career has progressed we have become less and less aggressive with treatment for papillary thyroid cancer. Many patients who a few years ago would have had a total thyroidectomy (the entire thyroid removed) and required a radiation treatment can today either be treated with a hemi-thyroidectomy (half the thyroid gland removed).

There are more rare types of thyroid cancer namely medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer which are much more difficult to treat. Fortunately they make up an extreme minority of thyroid cancer cases.

Did you know that small studies have shown that acupuncture can improve thyroid symptoms such as fatigue and brain fog? In addition, acupuncture has been shown to decrease Tg antibody levels. This is important because higher Tg antibody levels have been shown to correlate with more severe hypothyroid type symptoms. While there are low inflammation diets and other nutritional concepts that have been shown to improve thyroid symptoms, they have not been shown to improve Tg antibody levels like acupuncture.

Thyroid medication can be taken at night but it needs to be taken about 4 hrs after any food and at least 30-60 minutes before any food or other medications. Because of this, it is more commonly taken first thing in the morning after waking and then waiting the prescribed time before eating breakfast or taking other morning medications.
