The story of manhood began its struggle ages ago within dominance hierarchies that date back to our earliest human ancestors. Many behaviors contributed to the way men were sized up in their communities. The genesis of the values of courage and diligence likely began as communities fought to protect their lands from the threat of other tribes and villages. The heroic was heroized and the cowardly were determined to be cravens.
The traits of what it means to be a man have evolved, shifted, and changed over the course of thousands of years. And what it means to be a man today seems far different than it appears to have been like among, say - the Spartans of ancient Greece. Yet as a male collective, we’ve somehow grown soft in comparison, and we still sometimes hunger for that gritty, rough, and toughness laying dormant in our blood because let’s face it - that’s just a part of who we are.
Over the course of many generations, which brought us through the industrial revolution and nowhere - the digital age, new traits are entering into question and are being weighed out by society as a means of evolution assisting us in determining which traits will survive.
But we have a legacy to keep alive. We cannot afford to lose touch with our masculine roots, not as individuals... and certainly not as a society.
It’s never too late to take back your manhood. In fact, there’s no time to waste.
