How to Support a Loved One Struggling with Mental Illness..
DON'T:
🔹Compare their experience to yours or others'
🗨️"others have it worse"
🗨️"everybody feels this way sometimes"
🔹Offer unsolicited, oversimplified advice
🗨️"just try to think positive"
🗨️"you should try yoga"
🔹Blame them for how they feel
🗨️"you just need to try harder"
🗨️"you're doing this to yourself"
🔹Minimize their feelings
🗨️"everything is fine"
🗨️"you're overreacting"
DO:
🔹 Actively listen to their thoughts or concerns
👂
🔹Let them know it's okay to seek professional help
🗨️"have you considered talking to a therapist about what you're going through?"
🗨️"would you like help finding a therapist, doctor, or looking at other options?"
🔹Validate their feelings
🗨️"it sounds like you're really struggling right now"
🗨️"it makes sense that you would feel that way"
🔹Offer your support
🗨️"do you want advice or for someone to listen?"
🗨️"i'm here whenever you need to talk"
🗨️"what can I do to help?"..
