Someone interested in the Cyprus Genealogy Database wrote to me and asked, in essence, "Is it worth it for me because my family is from (Village X)?" The short answer is yes.

Here is my complete reply: "There are more than xx entries from (Village X). Entries from this village will most certainly increase, but not any faster than those from other villages because I don't have a specific source of family trees (or a published village history) from (Village X).

Getting to your other question, I have taken many entries from lists online, such as the Missing from 1974, from both communities. That provided a strong start of more than 2,500 names, but they were mostly born around 1950 and well known and remembered. My second greatest source, which has provided the bulk of the entries, has been the Cyprus Gazette, available online. I have scanned (with my eyes) every page from 1878 through 1906 (more than 5,000 pages!) and have extracted every Cypriot name with all pertinent, useful information. I have then gone through the entire database (twice so far) to eliminate possible duplicates introduced by variations in transcription, such as one entry for John Johnides and another for Ioannis Ioannides, but both obviously for the same man. This is where many of the (Village X) names have come from.

Another type of source that has given thousands of names is published village histories. I have extracted all 2,000+ names from the family trees of Pano and Kato Kividhes and am in the laborious but interesting process of doing the same for Gastria-Patriki. I have several more similar books, though not one for (Village X), and will march through them in their turn. When done, I will have catalogued just about every person in those villages from 1800 to the date of publication (usually about 1990).

Another rich source has been Ancestry.com. They have no records from Cyprus proper but have many from Cypriots who went to the U.S., U.K., and Australia. I have entered a dozen or so names from (Village X) from that source, taking info from their passenger lists, naturalization papers, etc.

You can see that I am spread thin. So that I don't bore the majority with entries of no interest to them (as from a particular village), I juggle these sources. I figure that I add about 50 names per week, so it will take me about 10 weeks to add another 500 entries and send the next update to the subscribers."

A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT IN CYPRIOT GENEALOGY

The Cyprus Genealogy Database is now available as a subscription. There is a one-time (lifetime) subscription fee of 20 Euros or $25 US. Payment can be made via PayPal to mattell56@gmail.com. (Other modes of payment can be arranged by sending an email to gttwroots@gmail.com.)
The database includes more than 25,000 entries, most from before 1920. I have decided to make the Database available as a subscription to A) get it into as many hands as possible, and B) get a little income to keep the Database growing and to improve access to it and to more records.
A subscriber, for the one-time fee, will get a copy of the Database as a fully searchable, Excel-compatible spreadsheet AND free updated copies every time the database grows by another 500 entries. This should be about every 3 months, at present rates. Forever! Or at least as long as I can keep doing it, and I foresee doing it for many years!
The Database can be copied and shared because a newer, bigger version is always in progress. So why pay the fees? Because you will always get the newest update, while those who work with shared copies will always be working with something less.

Friends, for several years I have had a number of language-related videos on YouTube under my name. I have now changed the name of the channel to "Genealogist to the World." The new mission of the channel will be to do all possible to increase genealogy web content for the nations of Africa, Asia, and anywhere else that is under-served and under-represented on the Internet. I will be posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Mondays will be Q&A. Wednesdays will be (one by one) a report card on the state of access to genealogical records in the countries of the developing world. Fridays will be a weekly round-up of news from the archiving world and of our efforts. I invite you to follow the channel, to subscribe, and to share, share, share. Together we will change the landscape of family history research in the furthest corners of the world.

After much manipulation of files and images, I have added the Biographical Encyclopedia of Pakistan, 1960-61, to the website at www.RadixMundi.com. It has over 700 pages of photos and biographies from East and West Pakistan before they became divided.

My work on ancestry in Mozambique is advancing well. It has made me interested in other Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia. I knew about Angola (almost no records available online) and was reminded about Goa (almost no records online). The surprises were Macau, by Hong Kong , and the colonies of Damao (Daman) and Dui in northwest India. Who knew? None have many records online. Someone needs to work with the Arquivo Historico Ultramarino de Portugal to make more records available.
