ESSENTIAL OIL EDUCATION: Did you know that both Coriander and Cilantro come from the same plant, Coriandrum sativum? They are also from the same plant family (Umbelliferae) as Caraway, Dill, and Fennel.

Coriander essential oil is made from the seeds, which have been used for thousands of years - since the ancient days of Greece and Egypt - and has been discovered in many tombs. It has also been used in perfumery and is still very popular as a spice. Coriander is valued for having analgesic, antifungal, antimicrobial, regenerative, tonic, digestive properties. Of note, it has been used for bone aches, muscle pain, and stiffness due to its gentle warming effect. More recently, some have also used Coriander essential oil to support the treatment of anorexia nervosa due to its stimulating effect on the appetite. I have recently taken to including it in small amounts in my baking - it adds a gentle, sweet note to baked goods like biscuits and bread and has been compared by some in effect to vanilla extract.

Cilantro essential oil is made from the leaves of the plant and is familiar as a culinary herb. It was for the odor of the crushed leaves that the ancient Greeks named the plant, as they found it reminiscent of the smell of crushed bedbugs ('koris' is Greek for bug). Cilantro essential oil is also used for digestion and some believe it to be helpful in cleansing heavy metals from the body. Additionally, Cilantro essential oil is higher in aldehydes than Coriander essential oil; it is a strong antimicrobial agent.

What do you use Coriander and Cilantro for?

Fennel Essential Oil:
The composition and antimicrobial activity of Fennel Essential Oil has shown inhibition against Bacillus cereus, Bacillus magaterium, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus substilis, Eschericha coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Micrococcus lutus, Pseudomonos pupida, Pseudomonos syringae, and Candida albicans!

It was reported by Nenad et al. (2007) that the main advantage of natural agents is that they do not enhance the antibiotic resistance, a phenomenon commonly encountered with the long-term use of synthetic antibiotics.

The bottom line? Fennel Essential Oil is valuable not only for increasing shelf life of foodstuffs but it could be a future target for replacing synthetic antibacterial agents.

Are you dreading cleaning the toilets in your house? We can't help you with the mess but we can help you clean it! Try this non-toxic option for toilet bowl cleaner!

Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner Recipe:
-2 cups vinegar
-1 cup baking soda
-5 drops Spark Naturals Melaleuca essential oil

Sprinkle the baking soda in the toilet bowl, covering the surface of the bowl as much as possible. Drop in the essential oil around the bowl, then drizzle the vinegar over the baking soda.
When the vinegar and baking soda collide, a reaction will occur that causes it to start bubbling and fizzing. This natural bubbling will help to clean the toilet. Also, the Spark Naturals Melaleuca essential oil has antimicrobial benefits that will help to disinfect and kill any bacteria in the toilet.

When it stops fizzing, use a toilet brush or a rag to scrub the toilet bowl to help remove any remaining spots. Flush the toilet to rinse it. Repeat if necessary, for stubborn stains.
