Even Walgreens talks about wellness! I can tell you for certain that wellness is not to be found there. Wellness means enjoying good health on all levels. The World Health Organization’s definition of health is: a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Americans are in a sorry state of health. We rank almost dead last in health outcomes among developed nations, even though we spend more than any nation on so-called health care. The modern medical system, aka health care, is a system based on attempting to eradicate symptoms of poor health by poisoning the body. Our bodies cannot be poisoned to health! And though medical care is necessary at times, the medical approach does not, and cannot, restore health and well-being. I call my natural health care business: CORE Natural Wellness for a very good reason. Our wellness approach focuses on guiding and supporting our patients to greater health and well-being, guided by the principles of Nature. Our bodies are designed to heal and recover naturally, and when that is not happening, something is interfering with the body’s innate ability to heal and repair. (This interference is what chiropractors call subluxations.) The CORE of my practice is chiropractic. I am proud to be a chiropractor. Chiropractic is the largest and oldest form of drugless healing in America. Chiropractic has been misunderstood, maligned, and marginalized in our society. There are a lot of reasons for that---a subject for another time. Even for those who appreciate chiropractic, it is most often thought of as a way to quickly get out of neck and low back pain and headaches. Our profession is good at relieving pain. Almost too good. I call that being a glorified aspirin. Because if we stop at pain relief, we miss the true gift of chiropractic, which is to restore function to the nervous system, and therefore all the systems of the body. This is true wellness, true health, true healthcare. Vibrant health starts with a healthy nervous system. All systems of the body require proper nourishment, hydration, breath, movement, and mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Given the world we have created, we must attend to minimizing toxins, while maximizing nourishment. I call all of this the CORE principles for health by Nature. When any of these CORE elements are lacking, or out of balance, this is STRESS on the body, mind, and brain. Constant, chronic, low level stress imbalances the body and the brain. This causes subluxations in the spine, and imbalanced brain wave patterns in the brain. Because the brain controls the body, the body follows the brain into further imbalance, and health begins to deteriorate.

The position you sleep in is important to your health and to your brain! 😴

β€œDuring sleep, the space between brain cells expands, allowing fluid to rapidly flow through the brain and wash away toxins that have built up in the central nervous system during waking hours.”

The removal of waste products from the brain reduces your risk of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.

A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience β€œinvestigated how sleeping positions affected the removal of toxins from the brain. The study found that β€œside sleeping was the most efficient way to cleanse the brain of waste”.

Other side sleeping benefits include:

β€’ Aids with digestion
β€’ Gravity moves waste through colon (left side sleeping)
β€’ Reduces heartburn (left side sleeping)
β€’ Boosts brain health
β€’ Reduces snoring/sleep apnea

Sleeping on your back offers a number of health benefits as well because it allows your head, neck and spine to rest in a neutral position and β€œuses gravity to keep your body in even alignment over your spine”.

Sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your health. It places an enormous amount of stress on your nervous system which can lead to a number of health issues. It also places stress on vertebral joints and muscles, which over time will lead to early degeneration, osteoarthritis, reduced flexibility, pain and more.

Poor sleep positions place significant stress on your brain and nervous system.

Chiropractors, through chiropractic adjustments, restore function to the spine reducing risk of spinal degeneration and osteoarthritis while improving flexibility but most importantly reducing stress on the brain and nervous system to help keep you healthy.

So, choose to sleep on your back or side (preferably left) and be sure to get adjusted.

It’s important to wear a repellent to protect yourself from ticks especially when you are walking in the woods.

But stay away from DEET! Research has linked it to a number of health issues.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States. If left untreated, infection can spread to the joints, the heart and nervous system and place incredible stress on your brain.

People who suffer from Lyme disease can have a very diminished quality of life due to symptoms that can manifest as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, autoimmune conditions, depression, anxiety and even memory loss. Chronic Lyme disease is called β€œthe great imitator” for this reason.
