MIDWEEK REFECTIONS....

The Magic of the "Oldies" and Why Our Bodies Love to Move
Have you ever noticed how a song from your high school years can instantly change your mood? It turns out there is some incredible science behind that "time-machine" feeling! When we pair those favorite old tracks with a bit of dancing, we aren’t just reminiscing—we’re actually giving our brains and bodies a major boost.

The "Golden" Connection
Psychologists call it the Reminiscence Bump. It’s the discovery that our brains are hardwired to anchor onto music and memories from our late teens and early twenties more than any other time in our lives. When we hear those songs, it’s like our brain’s emotional center lights up, helping us feel more like "ourselves" again.

Dance as "Brain Food"
It’s fascinating to learn that dancing is one of the best things we can do for mental sharpness. Because it combines rhythm, balance, and emotion all at once, it encourages the brain to grow and stay flexible. It’s almost like "Miracle-Gro" for our neural pathways!

A Natural Reset
We’ve all felt that "ahhh" moment when we start to move to a good beat. That’s actually our nervous system shifting gears. Rhythmic movement helps signal to our bodies that we are safe and grounded, which naturally lowers stress and lets our "rest and digest" system take the lead.

The Joy Chemical
Beyond the physical exercise, there’s a beautiful chemical reaction happening. Moving to music we love releases a cocktail of dopamine and endorphins. It’s a natural, joyful way to lower the stress hormones that can wear us down, leaving us feeling refreshed and more vibrant.

Next FREE Groove: ReAwaken. Tuesday April 21, 1pm Central. DM for invite....

Come On Everybody… Let’s twist again, Like we did last summer... (or was it the summer before…?) 💃✨

This week, we’re taking a sweet detour—stepping out of our usual "lyric-lovely" focus and back into the era of the past. We’re letting the words fade into the background so we can move to the frequencies our cells remember. (did we even pay attention to the lyrics back then??)

Interestingly, this theme found me more than I chose it. A participant mentioned "oldies" last week, and around the same time, I was reading about how revisiting the environment of our past can actually signal our cells to reawaken. There is a youthful energy from those earlier chapters of our lives that is still very much alive within us today, just waiting for the right rhythm to call it forward.

This week in Groove, we’re exploring what happens when familiar songs meet the bodies we live in today. It’s a way to unlock ease, joy, playfulness, and that beautiful sense of: "I remember this…."

Expect simple movement, deep breath, and a playlist of songs many of us recognize from the radio days (mostly 60s this time around....). No pressure. No performance. Just an invitation to reconnect with pieces of your past that still know how to make you smile and come alive. (And if you’re too young to remember these songs, it’ll still be fun!)

If you’re craving a week that feels light, familiar, and surprisingly uplifting, this session will meet you right where you are.

Hope to see you there! 🎶

Because it doesn't say "therapy" on the label doesn't mean it's not therapeutic.

Literature, music, poetry, visual art, dance, forms of body work & spiritual disciplines & performance art have been contributing to human healing LONG before "psychotherapy" was even a word.

🌻Theme of the Week: PURPOSE

This week at Mae's Groove, we’re exploring the embodied side of PURPOSE — the kind that doesn’t come from pushing harder, but from listening inward.

Through simple movement, breath, and a playlist built around the spark within us all, we’ll spend time noticing what feels true and meaningful.

No pressure. No performance. Just space to reconnect with the deeper “why” beneath our steps.

If you’re craving clarity that feels grounded instead of overwhelming, this week’s session will meet you right where you are.

Join a virtual session or request your own. Message me for details.

MIDWEEK REFLECTIONS....

🌿 Why We Balance on One Foot in Groove?

Balancing on one foot isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence. In our sessions, this simple practice becomes a whole‑body meditation:

It pulls us into the moment. We can’t overthink and balance at the same time. Our attention naturally drops into our body.

It steadies the nervous system. Slow breath + tiny micro‑adjustments = calm, grounded regulation.

It strengthens our inner GPS. Feet, ankles, hips, and core wake up, helping us feel more rooted and confident in our body.

It teaches emotional resilience. Wobbles are welcome. Returning to balance is part of the practice.

🌿 More Reasons We Practice One‑Foot Balance

Balancing on one foot lights up so many systems in the body:

Improves balance + helps prevent falls. Stabilizing muscles around our ankles, knees, and hips grow stronger and smarter — one of the most research‑supported ways to reduce fall risk at any age.

Strengthens the whole lower body. Ankles, calves, quads, glutes, and deep core all switch on to keep us steady.

Wakes up our proprioception. Our internal “where am I in space?” sense becomes sharper, supporting safer walking, turning, bending, and daily movement.

Builds joint stability. Those micro‑adjustments help train the ligaments and tendons that protect our joints.

Supports brain health. Balance work engages the cerebellum and improves coordination, focus, and cognitive processing.

Enhances breath awareness. Our breath naturally slows and deepens as our body organizes around balance.

Encourages mindful posture. Our spine lifts, our chest opens, and our alignment softens into ease.

Invites playful exploration. Once we find our center, we can sway, reach, or shift — turning balance into a moving meditation.

In Groove, balancing isn’t about holding a pose. It’s about discovering how our body finds center again and again — with breath, curiosity, and awareness..

Theme of the week: Gratitude & Thanksgiving

A hot topic in one of my communities this week, so I thought it fitting to create a like-hearted playlist.

Gratitude and thanksgiving, while often used interchangeably, invite us into two different experiences.

Thanksgiving is the practice—the noticing, the naming, the giving thanks for the people, moments, and blessings that touch our lives.

Gratitude, though, is something deeper.
A steady place within.
A quiet well that doesn’t run dry when circumstances shift.

This week, we’ll move between the two…
Through breath and movement, we soften, we notice, we open—
not just to the good around us,
but to the presence of something good within us.
