10/23/2025

George Delano Akers, age 86, of Pulaski, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital.

Born on April 10, 1939, in Cambria, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Harvey Blain Akers and Carlene Clark Akers. George was the last surviving member of his family, having been preceded in death by his eight siblings and their spouses: Hampton (Lucille) Akers, Dorothy Ford, Clarbel “Tootsie” Akers, John “JD” Akers (Janette), Betty (Jack) Linkous, Kelly (Nicki) Akers, Barbara (Dickie) Crockett, and Janet Cundiff.

George worked many jobs throughout his life, eventually retiring from the Radford Arsenal. He never met a stranger and was known for his kindness, humor, and deep love for his Pulaski community. With a quick wit and easy charm, George became the resident storyteller, famous for his jokes and playful teasing. Though he often joked about being “tight with a dollar,” he was generous in spirit, always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.

He had a lifelong love for animals—especially his cats—and found great joy in gospel music, singing hymns, and attending local singing events. George was a proud member of The Worship Center in Pulaski, where he loved to worship and spend time with friends.

To many, George was best known as the number-one fan of the Pulaski County Cougars—especially their football program. His memory for plays, players, and game details was uncanny. He loved to “take jabs” at his buddies across the New River Valley when the Cougars won, though he wasn’t quite as eager to take the teasing when the tables were turned. He loved traveling to games with his three pals, Ronnie Burchett, Wayne Tickle, and Eddie Parks. He often reminisced about his “good ol’ days” growing up around Calfee Park with his Pulaski buddies, where countless cherished memories were made.

George is survived by his loving family:
- Daughters: Ginger (Scott) Cary of Powhatan, VA; Tammy Akers of Chesterfield, VA; Valerie (Gregg) Faulkner of Mathews, VA
- Son: Anthony (Jody) Akers of Pulaski
- Grandchildren: Heather (Jacob) Newton, Allyson (Casey) Cary, Alex (Aubrie) Akers, Alaina (Grant) Osteen, Ayden Akers, Aviston Akers
- Great-grandchildren: Jordan Cary, Jaxon Newton, Emmarie Osteen
- Brother-in-law: Ken Ford

God also blessed George with an extended family who he loved dearly—Priscilla (Frank) Rennie, Sam (Megan) Wise and daughter Maverly, Anthony (Lisa) Wise and children Lola and Levi, and Alan Alexander. Add to that a long list of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who could fill a room—and usually did when George started telling stories or cracking jokes.

A special mention goes to George’s lifelong friend and “brother,” Jimmy (Marie) Babb who stood by his side throughout their lives together. The family also wishes to recognize his devoted companion, Sandra Williams, whose kindness, faithfulness, and care brought him great joy and comfort. The family further extends heartfelt thanks to Randy Queen for ensuring George made it to as many football games as possible—even in recent weeks—to cheer on his beloved Cougars.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the exceptional staff at both Lewis Gale Hospitals in Pulaski and Montgomery County, as well as to the compassionate team at Good Samaritan Hospice. Their tender care, warmth, and grace were a blessing to George and his family during his final days. He was surrounded by a team of earthly angels who treated him with great love.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 31st, at 11:00 a.m. at The Family Worship Center with Pastor Jeff Willhoite officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Family Worship Center, and again one hour prior to the service on Friday morning.

Janie Hurd Akers, age 75, of Pulaski, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at LewisGale Hospital Pulaski.

Janie was born on May 15, 1950 to Lawna Harkrader Hurd and Nathaniel “Ape-Eye” Hurd, Jr. A graduate of the Pulaski High School class of 1968, she went on to further her education, first studying liberal arts at Virginia Tech before transferring to New River Community College, where she graduated in 1971, and later studying accountancy at Tidewater Community College (1981) and Project Management at George Washington University (2001). From May 1978 to January 2006, Janie worked in Civil Service in Norfolk, VA, where she proved herself an invaluable colleague and was afforded many opportunities to travel, a perk of the job she treasured most highly. In the latter part of her career, she traveled to both Holland, Spain, and Italy twice, respectively. She visited Sicily, Hawaii, Dubai, Naples, England, and Germany–just to name some of her favorites. She never failed to bring back a magnet or notable trinkets to commemorate each of her trips and regaled her loved ones with anecdotes and photographs of all the beauty she had the privilege to see over the course of her long, successful career.

Shortly after retiring in 2006, Janie moved back home to Pulaski to be near and help care for her mother. A conscientious member of her local community, Janie volunteered regularly over the years with several local non-profit organizations, such as Friends of the Pulaski Theatre, So Fresh, Greater Pulaski Alliance, and Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley. She was an enthusiastic supporter of local business and wholeheartedly invested in seeing her home community grow and thrive, sometimes even offering her book-keeping expertise to new businesses. Janie was a long-time participant with the Pulaski, VA Elks Lodge, where she served as the Lodge Recording Secretary for two years. She also travelled to four state conventions and visited other lodges on behalf of the lodge as a representative.

Janie is preceded in death by her parents, her older brother Nathaniel “Nat” Hurd, III, and her husband Barry Akers. She is survived by her brother, David Hurd; sister-in-law, Joy Hurd; niece, Sara Hurd-Whittemore; niece, Shannon Custer; nephew, Shawn Custer; nephew, Jeffrey Hurd; a number of beloved great-nephews and great-nieces; many first cousins, and hundreds of friends and loved ones across the state of VA.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 24th, 2025 at First United Methodist Church of Pulaski. Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service led by Rev. Josh Kilbourne. There will be a processional immediately following the service to Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.

Indigo “Indi” Amani Manning, age 4, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday October 7th, 2025. Indi was born on June 19th, 2021 in Charlottesville, VA to her mommy Jennifer “Lakin” Manning and her daddy Jonathan Duane Davis. Indi was a ray of sunshine in life- always smiling and giggling away. She never knew a stranger and made sure that she spoke to every single person she came in contact with and made them smile. She had the biggest imagination, and anybody could see that when she played with her toys. She loved all of her toys, but especially her treasured blanket, “Hymie”, which went everywhere with her. Indi loved to paint, draw, and listen and dance and sing to all the same music her mommy did.

Most of all, Indi was a testimony to how much strength and resilience that can be held in such a little body. She motivated and inspired many with her medical journey that spanned her whole life, beginning with spending the first six months of her life at UVA Medical Center. She went through so much more than most people do in a lifetime but she always came out on the other side smiling. Indi never knew anything but love and warmth.

Indi is survived by her loving mother, Lakin Manning, and her father, Jonathan Davis; her aunt Caitlyn Manning (“Titi”) and uncle Alex Sealander; her grandfather Jeff Manning (“Pawpaw”) and step-grandmother Dawn Diamond (“Mom-mom”); her grandmother Missy Manning (“Nana”; her grandmother Somer Davis (“Grandma”), uncles Simon and Joshua Davis; and her devoted nurse and friend Sandy Hinkley, who cared for Indigo with immense love and tenderness.

Indi’s celebration of life will be held at Seagle Funeral Home in Pulaski, VA on Thursday October 16th, with visitation starting at 12pm and the service starting at 2pm.

Mike Davidson, a Pulaski native, country/bluegrass musician, for many years a resident of Glendale, AZ, slipped away to join the heavenly band from his home on Madison Avenue in Pulaski. He was 87 years old.
Mike left a special message for his children: “Daddy loved you very, very much. I appreciated you so much, and I could not ask for better children.”
Mike is proceeded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Davidson, and step-father, Ules Kelly Turner.
Those living to share and celebrate his memory include his former wife, Shirley White Burnett, the mother of Mike’s children: Michael Allen Davidson (Pulaski); Gena Lavonne Davidson (Carroll County); and Lisa Diane Easter (Cana, VA). He is also survived by five grandchildren and many greatgrandchildren. Mike is also survived by his sister Barbara Allen Turner Thomas (Barren Springs, VA). Mike and surviving wife, Katheryn (Sue) Davidson, were celebrating forty-five years of marriage.
Mike will always be known as a talented musician, mastering the electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin. By the age of seven his mother would take him to Pulaski’s early radio station where he would entertain listeners with his acoustical guitar. Later he played with Pulaski legend, June Draper.
He left Pulaski in 1979 to advance his musical career. In Arizona he played at the Civic Center in Phoenix, Matt’s Saloon in Prescott, Rodeo Days in Payson, Wickenburg Saloon, and many other places where people would watch his hands glide down the guitar for hours in amazement.
Mike’s accolades in life include: graduating from Pulaski High School in 1958, two years of supervisory training at the NRV college for Pulaski Furniture, and graduating from Ron Bailie School of Broadcasting in 1983. The achievement dearest to his heart is his service to his country from 1957 to 1965 in the Army/National Guard.
The phrase “you can take a man out of Virginia, but you can never take Virginia out of the man” holds very true for Mike because in August 2014 he moved home to Pulaski, Virginia. Mother nature was very kind in 2014 he played like a child sloshing around in the snow. The driving around in the snow was just as glorious. The Appalachians was definitely in his blood; he could reminisce for hours when looking at those mountains.
Officiates at Bedside Service:
Chuck Yates: Prayer and Isaiah 41:13
John Bradley White: Prayer, “Lord, we ask your presence in this time of our grief to say goodbye to our dear friend and neighbor and husband of Sue. Give Mike his much- needed peace and rest. We celebrate the talents you gave him, and we rejoice in the time we shared with him. We especially pray for Sue and Mike’s family as you comfort them and are present with them through their grief. Now we rejoice that Mike will join your eternal heavenly band as their music comforts all the saints. In Jesus name we offer this prayer. AMEN”
