New River Valley Agency on Aging Services for the elderly

04/21/2026

For the next day celebrating National Volunteer week, we would like to spotlight the New River Valley Agency on Aging . For 50 years, the NRV Agency on Aging has supported older adults and their families across the New River Valley by advocating, educating, and connecting people to vital resources. This year, we had 6 volunteers get specialized training to help with the Agency's program called VICAP (Virginia Insurance Counseling Program), they help individuals navigate Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance with ease.

Volunteer Montgomery's biggest project, Supplies for Seniors, was able to partner with the Agency on Aging to get the supplies to eligible seniors in the community. With their help, were able to help identify 300 members of the community! We are thankful for this partnership and look forward in continuing supporting the NRV Agency on Aging.

March is National Senior Nutrition Month. The New River Valley Agency on Aging's Nutrition Outreach Programs work to keep our older neighbors healthy, and living independently.

These programs include:

Home Delivered Meals Program-providing regular, nutritious meals to homebound seniors in the New River Valley. Meals are delivered by trained drivers who conduct wellness checks during each delivery.

Congregate Meals Programs, or Friendship Cafes offer an opportunity for qualifying NRV seniors to share a nutritious meal with other participants and engage in enrichment activities. Friendship Cafes meet 2-3 times per week and help support socialization, nutrition, movement and cognitive stimulation. Cafes are located throughout the New River Valley.

The Fido's Pantry Program provides pet food for homebound seniors who cannot afford to feed their pet. These seniors will often give up a meal, or other items, so that they can provide food for their animal companion. The Fido's Pantry Program works to solve this problem. Multiple studies have shown that pet ownership helps keep seniors engaged, promotes movement, and provides cognitive and emotional support.

The Staples for Seniors Program ensures that homebound seniors have a regular supply of nutritious, shelf-stable food that supplements their diet and provides back-up meals if the weather inhibits meal delivery.

Nutrition Assessment, Support and Counseling- the NRV Agency on Aging works with a registered dietician to help seniors evaluate their nutritional needs to optimize their health and well-being.
