Ms. Joanna Washington Larkins

Ms. Joanna Washington Larkins age 88 was born May 10, 1937 to the late Louis and Bessie Washington in Bethel, TN. Joanna made her earthly transition to her eternal rest on December 30, 2025 surrounded by family.

Joanna accepted Christ at a young age at Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she also received her early education which at the time was school and church. She later moved to Elkmont with her family where she attended Trinity High School.

As an adult she moved to Nashville where she was a member of Pilgrim Emanuel Baptist Church 50 plus years under the leadership of Reverend Oscar Miles. She served as President of Senior Usher Board. She sang in the church #2 Choir. She also served in the church Willing Works Auxiliary. After leaving Pilgrim she then joined with Hicks Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Pastor Jerry Holt.

Joanna attended Nashville Cosmetology School graduating and receiving her license to do hair. She was a beautician for 60 plus years. She was a member of the Tennessee Beautician Association.

Joanna was united in holy matrimony to Denver Larkins who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, John David Washington and James “aka Ginny” Washington; Sisters, Addie Lee Gilbert, Mary Virginia Johnson, Christine Johnson and Lou Ella Washington; Brother-in-laws, William H. Gilbert, John A. Johnson and Gilbert Johnson; and Sister-in-law, Liz Washighton.

Joanna leaves to cherish her memories her baby sister, Nell Ruth (Mitchell) Birdsong; her devoted niece, Darlene Birdsong; bonus nephew Henry Birdsong; bonus children, Julian and Beverly Silverfield, life-long friend of 63 years, Elizabeth B. Cooke and a host of additional nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews and cousins. She will be truly missed.

Public viewing for Joanna Washington Larkins will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home, 327 Mill Street, Pulaski, TN.

Mr. James Cornell Gilbert, Sr

Mr. James Cornell Gilbert, Sr., 98, of Pulaski, Tennessee, passed away on December 31, 2025. Born on November 22, 1927, in Stella, Tennessee, James lived a life full of unmatched determination and work ethic that guided his life.

James attended Bridgeforth High School in Giles County and there soon after joined the United States Army and became a Sergeant working on training officers on artillery and infantry weapons in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Shortly after leaving the military, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he resided for a significant portion of his life.

James worked for the United States Postal Service (USPS) for 40 years and 10 months. He also worked as a maintenance man for Markwood Apartments on the southside of Indianapolis for 30 years.

James made the move back to Ethridge, Tennessee in 1992 where he was able to get back to his true passion: hunting for game, farming, gardening. Over his years of life, James always had a passion for tending to a garden and farm animals (goats, cows and chickens). He enjoyed working in his garden and growing cabbage, rattlesnake beans and turnip greens. James also enjoyed playing cards and listening to a San Francisco Giants game on the radio.

The importance of family was always a strong pillar in James’ life. He always made the effort to reach out to his loved ones - whether through a phone call or cards in the mail. He was never afraid to lend a helping hand to others.

He was also a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church in Prospect, Tennessee where he also served as a Deacon.

Later on in his life, some of James’ hobbies included collecting model cars, riding on his tractor and Kawasaki Mule, and watching hummingbirds from his back porch in the countryside.

James was preceded in death by his parents Marion Gilbert and Ben Gilbert; his brother, Earl Ezel Gilbert; his sisters Marvalene Gilbert, Ada Williams, Katherine Reynolds; and his sons James (Elsandra) Gilbert Jr. and Willard (Jessie Mae) Dean Gilbert.

James is survived by his children: son Larry (Tracey) Gilbert of Virginia and Kathy Gilbert of Indiana; girlfriend: Louise Alexander of Utah; his 10 grandchildren: Sharon Gilbert of Tennessee, Tamara Gilbert of Tennessee, Theresa Gilbert of Tennessee, Wallace Gilbert of Tennessee, Tony Gilbert of Tennessee, Shawntel Carpenter of Texas, Mary (Natasha) Gilbert of Virginia, Shannon Gilbert of Virginia, Naomi Gilbert of California, Mary Gilbert of California and Kayla Saunders of Indiana; as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

Through James’ unwavering strength and kind spirit he survived anything that life threw at him. He will be remembered for the life he worked so hard to build. The legacy he leaves behind will not be remembered just by his family, but by the people whose lives he touched throughout his 98 years of life. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Joseph Erastus Sutton

Mr. Joseph Erastus Sutton of Pulaski was born July 5, 1948 to the late Wilson and Blanche Sutton in Pulaski, TN. He transitioned to his eternal rest on December 13, 2025 at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia, TN.

Joseph Sutton was a dedicated history teacher, in Pulaski and Huntsville AL, whose influence spanned many decades and countless lives. He was a well-respected citizen in Pulaski and surrounding communities, known for his integrity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to education and service.

He graduated from Giles County High School, and furthered his education by attending and graduating from Tennessee State University.

He found God as a youth and attended Beulah Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon and Treasurer.

A true community leader, Joseph served with multiple organizations and was a County Commissioner. He also held the role of President of the NAACP, where he worked tirelessly to promote equality, civic engagement, and opportunity for all. His leadership left a lasting imprint on the community he loved.

He also served as treasurer of the Greater Richland Creek M.B. Association. In addition, he was Chairman of the Pulaski Regional Planning Committee, and a former President of the Giles Community Education Association, Joseph was exceptionally well read and possessed a deep knowledge of history, culture, and current events.

He was also an avid sports enthusiast, closely following school, local, and national teams.

Often called the Sutton family historian, Joseph carried with him a remarkable memory and a deep respect for family legacy. This same gift extended to his students—he knew them well and remembered not only their names, but also their families and life stories. These moments reflected the profound and enduring relationships he built over a lifetime of teaching.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Blanche Sutton, and his sister, Naomi Whitfield.

He leaves to mourn many loving cousins and a special friend, Elizabeth Gardner, along with generations of students, colleagues, and community members who will forever remember his guidance, kindness, and dedication.

Georgia was a lifelong resident of Pulaski, Tennessee. She received her education in the Giles County School System. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She leaves behind a legacy her family will treasure forever.

Georgia was a member of Pigeon Roost Missionary Baptist Church later moving her membership to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years until her health began to decline.

She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Annie Bell Perry; brothers, William David Perry, Wallace Perry, James Robert Perry and Jones Arthur Perry; sister, LouAnna Perry and grandson, Gerron Perry .

Minister Juanita Brown

Minister Juanita Brown of Pulaski, age 75 was born on May 26th, 1950 in Prospect, TN. to the late Clifford and Drucilla Johnson Brown Sr.

Juanita accepted Christ at an early age. She accepted her calling to the ministry in 2000 and she was faithful on her Christian journey until her health declined. She carried that love for God until he called her home on October 17, 2025.

She was retired from Hardee’s as one of the best biscuit makers ever. Juanita loved God, gospel music, children and babies. She was a warm, loving, and kind woman that would do anything to help anyone.

Juanita met and married the late John W. Brown Sr. and to this union three children were born.

She is preceded in death by one brother, Clifford Brown Jr.; three sisters, Ida Lou Brown, Etta Faye Brown Cosby, and Carolyn Horton.

Juanita leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Cedric Terrence Brown, and John W. (Tracy) Brown Jr., one devoted daughter, Romona Michelle Brown; eleven grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerome (Avis) Hambric; brother-in-law, James Cosby and a host of additional relatives and friends.

Mrs. Della Mae "Squeaky " Young

Mrs. Della Mae “Squeaky” Young of Pulaski was born January 14, 1946 in Pulaski, TN to the late Howard Patterson and the late Della Patterson Robertson. She departed this life surrounded by loved ones on October 9, 2025.

Due to her stepfather, the late Robert A. Robertson’s position in the Air Force, she was able to attend high school in Japan. She would go on to complete high school back in the United States at Bridgeforth High School in Pulaski, TN and graduate in 1963. In May of 1968, at the age of 25, she became a Daughter Elk of the Mattie Bridgeforth Temple #1120. This organization would become an integral part of her life. She went on to serve in many positions including Daughter Ruler and Financial Secretary. She was also awarded her State and Grand honors.

Della was an amazing cook. She showed her love for others through her cooking. She served as Chairman of the Food Committee at St. Elizabeth’s Primitive Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for countless years. She also worked for 20 plus years with Valley Food Services at Martin Methodist College. She was beloved by many of the students and faculty alike. Her talents in the kitchen will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Della is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, two daughters, Angela Young and Teresa Ann Williams, also two great-grandchildren Emilio Cruz-Moody and Honor Leilani Rogers.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters Amy(John) Moody and Lennita(Roshad)Tate, her grandchildren Asha Moody, Ariel(Cesar)Mendez, Tarica Fowler, Talesa Brown, Kreshia Hayes, Tela Reynolds, Rakeem Reynolds, Xavier Tate, 11 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and Special Friend Nathan Reed.

Ms. Shirley Martin of Prospect was born to the late Jimmie Lee Martin and George Martin on September 15, 1962. She was called to her Heavenly home on September 28th 2025 the year of our Lord.

Shirley loved life and always looked for the good in it. Shirley rededicated her life to Jesus Christ at Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Prospect, TN under the pastorate of Pastor Robert Chatman.

Shirley leaves behind four sisters Lena (Ollie) McWilliams, Lisa (Phillip) Reynolds, Brenda Abernathy, Jenese (Rodney) Brown and one brother Elvis L. Marsh. She is also blessed to have one Aunt Alice Faye (Marvin) Small of Pulaski who comforted her through her journey. Also, her long-time companion Clinton Kimbrough. She will be missed by her friends, family, cousins, and anyone else who had the fortune of meeting her.

Mr Fred Brown

Mr. Fred Brown was born on November 4, 1938 to the late John Thomas and Lucille Brown in the Cedar Grove Community in Giles County, Tennessee. He transitioned to his Heavenly home on September 21, 2025.
Fred accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Anthony Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he loved to pray, sing and testify about the goodness of God.

He attended Cedar Grove School until the 6th grade. Thereafter, he received his education through home-bound services.

Fred possessed many skills including building tools and crafting chairs and toys for his siblings. Later Fred was a student at The Impact Center for disabled individuals. His great ability to interact with others gained him many friends. A great love of his was to attend activities at The Senior Citizen Center. He excelled at various games like Bingo where he was a big winner of prizes that he proudly brought home. He stayed active until his health begin to fail.

Fred was full of surprises such as driving a tractor before he was old enough to. He loved young children especially his great and great-great nieces and nephews. And he loved his family but most of all he loved the Lord and expressed his faith and devotion through song and prayer. He did not need an audience but would express his love. In addition, he loved his hats. He had acquired an impressive and vast collection.

He resided at Elk River Health and Nursing Center of Ardmore Tennessee where he received excellent care until he transitioned into the hands of God, our Heavenly Father.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Lucille Brown and sister, Annie Pearl Jordan as well as four brothers, William Brown, Clifford Brown, Eugene Brown and John Brown.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted sisters, Eulelia Lawrence, Prospect, TN and Brenda K. Brown, Jamaica Queens, NY; brothers, Ira S. Brown, Prospect, TN, Clarence Brown, Nashville, TN, and dedicated brother, Wade (Melinda) Brown, Pulaski, TN; He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Rickie Lee Tucker

Mr. Rickie Lee Tucker was born on December 29, 1960, in Pulaski, Tennessee, to the late Rev. Riley and Iva Lou Tucker. He departed this life on September 3, 2025, at the age of 64.

Rickie was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sandra Sizemore, Zollie Johnson, and Mary Tucker.

He was a proud graduate of Giles County High School, Class of 1981. Known for his love of college football and basketball, Rickie could often be found enjoying a cold Sundrop while cheering on his favorite teams. He had a gift for making others laugh, a heart for his friends and family, and a personality that could light up any room. To many, he was known as ‘Ole Rickie Theus,’ a man whose presence and laughter made him the life of the party.

At an early age, Rickie accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In the early 2000s, under the leadership of Rev. Ralph Marshall of First Missionary Baptist Church Elkmont in Elkmont, AL, he accepted his calling into the ministry, faithfully serving God and others.

Rickie leaves behind to cherish his memory:
Children: two sons, Gerald Tucker and Jarvis (Cordelia) Tucker; one daughter, Jasmine Tucker. Grandchildren: Noah, Ameia, Na’Livia, Antonio Jr., Aaliyah, Jamiyah, Rainah, and Joshua Lee. Siblings: two brothers, Herman (Janice) Tucker and William “Bubba” Tucker; four sisters, Donna (Noble) Perry, Dorothy (Billy) White, Virginia (Herbert) Wallace, and Elizabeth “Ann” Garrett. Extended Family: surviving uncles and aunts, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who loved him deeply. Life long friend: Vickie Tucker

Mrs. Agnes Irene Gilbert Phillips

Mrs. Agnes Irene Gilbert Phillips of Pulaski, age 82 was born on December 12, 1942, to the late Mr. Ozell and Mrs. Katherline Gilbert. She departed this life on September 1, 2025.

Agnes accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Community Church for years where she served as mother, secretary, choir member and a part of a mission group.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Will Phillips Jr. in 1978.

Agnes loved her family dearly and her church family. She enjoyed working in her flower bed and watching her soaps on tv.

She is survived by her son Timothy (Larissa) Phillips of Pulaski, TN; also, her sisters, Barbara Sue (Fred) Gilbert and Shirley Gipson; stepdaughter, Libby Phillips; stepson, Henry Phillips; grandchildren, Shuncie Phillips, Alfreda Phillips, Amaya Phillips, Mariah Phillips, Jakycius Reynolds, Shamika Phillips, Tanika (Greg) Miller, and Tenisha Reynolds; 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Agnes Irene Gilbert Phillips will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025 beginning with visitation at 11am and 12noon funeral service immediately following at Temple of Praise Church, 1030 Ragsdale Lane, Pulaski, Tennessee.

Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Agnes Irene Gilbert Phillips.
