November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that each year approximately TWELVE MILLION (12,000,000) dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer? That’s gut-wrenching for us animal lovers.
There are some things you can do to give your pet their best chance at prevention or early detection including regular checkups, a healthy, well-balanced diet, teeth cleaning, and exercise.
Learn early warning signs and schedule a vet appointment right away if you notice any of the following:
- Abnormal Lumps - firm, grows quickly, or seems painful.
- Unexplained Weight Loss.
- Sores that don’t heal.
- Unusual odors - including the mouth, face, and other areas.
- Loss of Appetite or Difficulty Eating.
- Stiffness and/or Limping.
- Breathing difficulty - A chronic cough or labored breathing.
- Behavioral changes - “Sudden aggression, hiding, or anxiety can be symptoms of internal discomfort and may indicate an underlying health issue.”
- Change in Bathroom Habits - “Changes in urination or bowel movements, including blood, unusual frequency, or accidents”.
- Hesitation to exercise.
- Unexplained bleeding or discharge.
- Vomiting and Diarrhea (though these can be symptoms of a multitude of concerns, even a simple “cold”)
