Understanding addiction doesn’t mean enabling it. Enabling keeps someone stuck by shielding the addiction from consequences, often out of fear or misplaced love. Compassion, however, recognizes the humanity behind the behavior—it sees a person in pain, not a problem to be managed. You can hold firm, healthy boundaries while still offering empathy, dignity, and hope. True compassion supports accountability and recovery, without shaming or abandoning those who are suffering.
