If you are looking to avoid Red 40, consider a natural alternative.

Natural alternatives to toxic food coloring include:
👉 Annatto
👉 Carotenes
👉 Beets
👉 Paprika
👉 Turmeric

Many consumers are turning to these non-toxic food coloring options as alternatives to traditional toxic dyes.

There really is only one way to deal with food dye reactions/allergies and that is to avoid them.

I work with patients to figure out how to get the medications they need without the dyes. I also encourage patients to do the research on their own to try to figure out what their triggers are.

Congrats to Dr. Claudia Miller and colleagues for bringing awareness to Toxicant Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT). They describe TILT as a “two-stage disease process characterized by new-onset intolerances to certain chemicals, food and drugs following initiation by a major exposure or repeated low level exposures”. They also discuss the validated QEESI questionnaire, which we administer to all our new patients at AIM Center for Personalized Medicine. It is a invaluable tool in understanding an individual patient’s vulnerabilities and potential triggers.

Magnesium deficiency, also known as hypomagnesemia, is an often overlooked health problem.

One study suggests that up to 75% are not meeting their recommended intake.

In some cases, deficiency may be underdiagnosed since the obvious signs commonly don’t appear until your levels become severely low.

The causes of magnesium deficiency vary. They range from inadequate dietary intake to loss of magnesium from the body.

Health problems associated with magnesium loss include diabetes, poor absorption, chronic diarrhea, celiac disease and hungry bone syndrome. People with alcoholism are also at an increased risk

Vitamin A plays an important role in your vision. To see the full spectrum of light, your eye needs to produce certain pigments for your retina to work properly. Vitamin A deficiency stops the production of these pigments, leading to night blindness. Your eye also needs vitamin A to nourish other parts of your eye, including the cornea. Without enough vitamin A, your eyes cannot produce enough moisture to keep them properly lubricated.

Vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children worldwide. An estimated 250,000 to 500,000 children become blind every year because of vitamin A deficiency.

In pregnant women, vitamin A deficiency causes night blindness and may contribute to maternal mortality. Vitamin A deficiency also harms the immune system.
