Even the best mating on paper doesn't always produce the best calves.

Every calf receives half its DNA from the sire and half from the dam, but the exact combination is reshuffled each time through processes like segregation, recombination, and Mendelian sampling. So while a contemporary group may be made up of full siblings, there's still the possibility they look and perform differently.

It’s also why tools like EPDs, performance records, and genomics matter. They don’t eliminate variation, but they help stack the odds toward producing more calves that move your herd forward.

Why do genetics matter? There are a ton of good beef bulls out there so to narrow down your options, I will always ask: "What are your goals for the calf crop?". This matters because with genetics today, if you are looking to sell the most pounds at weaning, make jam up replacement heifers or fatten the best carcasses possible to feed your family...there can be different bulls that will help execute your specific goals.

In the spring of 2024, my husband and I wanted to have really nice replacement heifers out of our older cows that had really proven themselves. We also wanted to have nice feeder steers and heifers to sell at weaning time. So we utilized ABS Global - Beef's 60/40 program. We AIed around 60% of the cows (only cows in a good heat) to sexed female semen from a nice female making bull that would compliment our cows. The remainder were AIed to a more terminal Angus bull, in this case it was SPRINGFIELD RAMESSES 6124. This bull is good across the board in performance and feet and excels in carcass traits, putting him in the top 1% Carcass Index and the top 2% US Beef Index.

If you are asking yourself the question of; does the data correlate with the actual performance? I'm here to tell you that it does! My husband and I recently harvested four heifers for our Homegrown Beef business. Three were sired by RAMESSES and the fourth was bull bred. All three RAMESSES sired heifers graded Prime while the fourth graded High Choice. Now this fourth heifer is still a very nice heifer and high choice is nothing to be ashamed of in any way and very good beef! In our business, Prime can be sold for a premium which means a little extra money in our pocket. A simple breeding decision can make all the difference in the profitability of your business!
