Brooklyn CT March 15, 2023 Save Day Kimball Healthcare, a grassroots community organization in NE Connecticut, acknowledges the collapse of the acquisition agreement between Day Kimball Healthcare and Covenant Health of Tewksbury, MA. SaveDKH.org opposed this takeover which would have imposed restrictions of the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) by the Catholic Covenant system on DKH, resulting in significant restrictions in care and harms to the public health.
The sale would have transferred all assets of this rural, independent community hospital, medical practice, hospice and homecare services to the Covenant system. This acquisition would not have provided substantial new revenue to the system but impose requirements that would limit patient revenue and cause the immediate layoffs of DKH staff.
SaveDKH’s mission continues: to support Day Kimball Healthcare to assure that it remains a quality and essential resource to serve the healthcare needs of all our NE CT population. A healthcare system does not stand apart from its community. To that end,
we encourage efforts to assure that DKH remains locally controlled, transparent in its operations, and accountable to its patients and public.
While we did not see this acquisition as resolving all the financial challenges faced by Day Kimball Health, we welcome a nearly unified desire by our community to preserve the viability of DKH. We hope we can look now with renewed vigor and openness at all opportunities to strengthen and preserve this essential local institution.
