Karen Streeter, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist

Karen Streeter, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT #153419.

I have been working in the field of mental health for a little over a decade and have been providing therapy for almost 4 years of that time. I’ve worked in community mental health to provide services to people from communities that often don’t get access to care due to poverty, trauma, serious mental illness, addiction, and exclusion on the basis of gender, sexuality, race and disability. More recently, I’ve worked in a psychiatric hospital setting in outpatient treatment for people with mental health and substance use disorders. I love to help the people that I serve to grow and become who they really are, by focusing and building on their strengths, instilling hope for recovery and change, and by providing people with the tools they need to transcend the impact of trauma in their lives.

"You can hope for a better world, and still struggle with thoughts of wanting to die. You can encourage your friends to pursue their dreams and still struggle to get out of bed. You can be a strong advocate for anti-racism, and still struggle to love yourself, just as you are."

Andre Henry ,Thank you for inspiring me to be part of positive change.i

A staggering number of men are victims of domestic violence by their female partners. One speaks out to break the taboo.

Cheers to each of you doing the hard work to create safety inside your mind and body. No matter where you are on that path, you deserve a pause and to show respect of how hard that can be after experiencing the changes of traumatic impact.

Setting boundaries is often difficult but worth the discomfort. We can help support you in this process.

Raise your hand if you can relate!

I felt like I was being a horrible person…so I’d engage in the Do It Perfectly Method.

Meaning, I’d wait and wait (and wait) to find the absolutely perfect time to maaaybe sorta possibly express a wee bit of my needs.

By the way, there was no perfect time, nor did my needs ever clearly get expressed that way. 🙄

Others share similar stories, ways in which they tried to set boundaries while feeling bad about setting boundaries.

Some try the Stuff It Method.

They stuff their feelings about a problem….

(Stuffing, stuffing, stuffing)…

Until they explode.

And then they feel even guiltier. 😩

Still others never set the needed boundary at all.

That’s what I call the Avoid It Method.

They “solve” their problem by distancing themselves further and further from the potentially-solvable-situation.

Which is to say that they don’t ever address the actual problem, and they feel a greater sense of disconnection in the process. 😞

Man.

We do so many things to avoid doing the one needed thing, don’t we?

Our goal becomes to *avoid feeling uncomfortable.*

And that’s where we went wrong.

We accidentally set the wrong goal.

The goal we need is to learn how to set boundaries...

(Even though we may feel uncomfortable at times, especially at first).

Because, just sayin, it seems pretty clear that we aren’t avoiding discomfort using the other methods… 👀

When I realized I was gonna be uncomfortable either way, things began to change.

I decided I might as well be uncomfortable learning how to do the healthy thing.

I’m so glad I did.

You can, too.
