A cutting-edge radioligand therapy is changing prostate cancer care by precisely targeting cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Patients like Timothy Taylor are seeing remarkable results and improved outcomes.

“For a patient like Mr. Taylor, who has been fighting cancer with grace for a long time, getting a new opportunity that gives him options other than chemo and a break from those side effects is a wonderful thing. His strength and stamina during treatment have been inspiring to me as his provider," said Jennifer Slim, DO, a medical oncologist with MultiCare Cancer Institute.

Radioligand treatment is a targeted treatment for advanced prostate cancer that combines innovation and precision to delay disease progression.

Romantic relationships take two people — each with their own habits, learned behaviors and expectations.

While these quirks can make relationships range from loving to frustrating, it’s important to recognize that both partners play a part — good, bad or indifferent. “Communication is a lost art. You have to challenge yourself and be vulnerable," says Ahmad Bennett, MA, LMFTA, MHP, with MultiCare Behavioral Health – Northeast Community Center.

Not every behavior or habit in a relationship is concerning. Some are good and some are simply things to work on. Jump into that work now by taking a look through these “flags” to see where you and your partner land.

Spokane resident Patricia Lukens knew her life needed to change; she just didn’t know it would change during a visit at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital, where she was told she had five years to live if she didn’t change her eating habits.

Since her gastric bypass surgery, Lukens has traveled all around the world. She took a hot air balloon ride and rode a camel in Egypt, swam in Greece and walked old cobblestone streets in England — trips would never have happened if she hadn’t lost weight and gotten surgery.

People like Lukens come to Deaconess because of things they can no longer do, not because of the number on the scale, nurse practitioner Megan Vulcan said.

Garfield resident Patricia Lukens knew her life needed to change; she just didn’t know it would change during a visit at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital, where she was told she had five years to live if she didn’t change her eating habits.

After years of managing multiple health conditions, Marceia Dickinson decided it was time to take control. At 53, she met with bariatric surgeon Kelly Blair, MD, with MultiCare Center for Weight Loss & Wellness who recommended gastric bypass.

Following her surgery, Marceia no longer needed medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Her sleep apnea also resolved, allowing her to stop using a CPAP machine.

“Dr. Blair is amazing — he’s a great cheerleader,” she says. “He’s so positive; he supports you and cheers you on.”

After losing more than 100 pounds and having weight-loss surgery, Marceia Dickinson regained her energy and experienced major health improvements.

Kids are used to running around and playing all day with their friends and at school, so it’s important to not suddenly stop just because the weather changes.

Movement will look different for each kid and especially different than what you do for yourself. Children don’t need to hit a step goal, but they do need to get their legs and brains energized for about 30-60 minutes each day. That doesn’t mean setting a workout timer, though.

Focus on your goals as a family, look at what else is going on that day and find opportunities to get active.

Even when you can't get outside because of the weather, there's still plenty of fun and creative ways to keep your kids active.

Your doctor orders a blood panel, and to your surprise it reveals — at the age of 30 — that you’re prediabetic. You think, “But I’m too young!”

This isn’t time to panic, says Michael Bota, MD, endocrinologist, and medical director for population health at MultiCare Connected Care.

“We’re not diagnosing you with a medical condition that’s incurable,” he says. “We’re just saying there’s a red flag, and now’s the time to make changes.”

Prediabetes can go undiagnosed for years, but one in three U.S. adults have this health condition. Learn the risk factors and how to prevent prediabetes.

Matt Thoms has had low back pain and numbness in both of his legs off and on since he was a child. In 2018, he became completely dependent on a wheelchair.

After spending a month in the MultiCare Good Samaritan Inpatient Regional Rehabilitation Center, followed by outpatient rehab with his physical therapist, Lauren Christianson, he is now able to walk again.

“Lauren has been persistent with me and has pushed me. Because of her, I am no longer stuck in a wheelchair.”

By Kim Coleman, Manager, MultiCare Inpatient Rehabilitation Services Matt Thoms had been dealing with low back pain and numbness in both of his legs off and on since he was a child. At age 16, he underwent a lumbar fusion and then went a number of years without pain and numbness. But, in the past [....

We are excited to announce that four MultiCare Pulse Heart Institute locations, including Good Samaritan Hospital, are among the nation's top performing hospitals for treatment of heart attack patients.

“This really is an impressive achievement for the entire team and it reflects all our efforts to provide the highest quality care…it's nice to see our efforts recognized by the American College of Cardiology.”
–Daniel Guerra, MD, Coronary Artery Disease COE Physician Leader

The award recognizes Good Samaritan Hospital, Auburn Medical Center, Tacoma General Hospital and Deaconess Hospital for their commitment to and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that they’ve reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
