Teachers are at high risk for developing voice problems due to the prolonged use of voice and increased loudness used in the classroom (Roy et al., 2004).

Voice care tips for teachers:

I’m back from vacation and excited to talk about dysphagia! Voice and swallowing are so closely related, so it only makes sense that a voice therapist should also know about swallowing.

👄most people don’t think about swallowing until there is a problem

👄Most people don’t know that swallow therapy exists (I didn’t until I became an SLP!)

👄 most people don’t know that speech-language pathologists can treat swallow problems

Here are some general safe swallow strategies:

🍽️ sit upright 90 degrees when eating or drinking so you have gravity on your side

🍽️ take small bites and sips

🍽️ eat and drink slowly

🍽️ alternate solids and liquids

🍽️ brush your teeth and clean your mouth 2-3 times each day

And remember when your parents taught you not to talk with your mouth full? They were right! Not only is talking with a mouthful of food unsightly, but it can also be unsafe. When we talk, the airway needs to be OPEN to allow the vocal folds to vibrate and make sound. But when we are eating, the airway needs to be CLOSED so food does not go down the wrong pipe!

❌ Don’t talk with food in your mouth! Swallow first and then talk 😊
