Kaleidoscope Birth Services

Kaleidoscope Birth Services I am a DONA trained doula practicing in Puyallup, Wa. My goal is to help Mothers in the area have greater satifisfaction in their births.

The driving force behind how I practice is explained quite simply by this Ina May Gaskin quote: “Whenever and however you give birth, your experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life.”

I believe every mother has the right to a satisfying birth because it will shape their existence from that moment on. I believe the core to this is following your maternal instincts and surrounding yourself with a support system that will help facilitate your ideal birth. As a doula, I follow a mother guided approach. This means that I aim to be present and allow the birthing mother to use her connectedness to her own body, her partner, and her baby to influence how I support her.

Ever thought about how giving birth lying down is kinda...counterproductive? The birth canal curves upwards when you lie down, so you're going against gravity. Birthing on your back can make labor last longer because the body has to work much harder to eject the baby. It constricts blood vessels, meaning baby and mother won't receive the optimum levels of blood & oxygen. It also makes you more prone to tearing, and is typically more painful than birthing in an intuitive position. Your pelvis isn’t given the opportunity to open to its fullest capacity, and makes it harder for babies in non-optimal birthing positions to rotate or switch to better positions - which can lead to a need for medical intervention.

There are a number of positions to give birth in that are better for both mommy and baby. Unfortunately, hospitals sometimes have a habit of telling birthers that they “can’t” deliver a baby in any position besides on their backs. DON’T LISTEN. Request the squat bar. Adjust the bed to your liking. Switch to a side-lying position. Do what feels COMFORTABLE and - most importantly - follow your body’s lead.

It has been such a privilege to support members of the Kaiserslautern Military community over the past year and a half. I was privileged to attend my final birth here in the KMC during the wee hours of the morning. This birth reminded me of the importance of maintaining a healthy perspective during labor. Welcome to world Baby O!

I always tell my clients that the most important thing they should know about labor is that it is fluid. It is a moment in your life to tune into your body and trust your instincts. I had the privilege of witnessing a beautiful twin labor and birth this weekend. Mom trusted her instincts, followed her body's cues, and was able to navigate the ever changing experience of labor. In the end of her long labor, she was rewarded with two beautiful babies. Welcome to the world Baby J and Baby L.

It has been such a privilege to provide support to members of the Kaiserslautern Military community. I am happy to announce that I will be moving back home to the Tacoma, Washington area in April of 2017. It is my hope to continue to support families through the birthing process once I arrive.
