Early recovery can feel quieter than expected.
Not empty - just different.

When substance use has been driving dopamine levels, the brain needs time to rebalance. That can show up as feeling flat, unmotivated, or emotionally muted in early sobriety.

This isn’t failure. It’s biology doing its work.

With time, structure, and support, the brain begins to regulate again. Joy returns gradually - often in small, steady moments before it feels big.

Recovery isn’t about forcing happiness. It’s about giving your nervous system the safety it needs to heal.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone - and you’re not doing it wrong.

Loving someone through addiction isn’t about doing everything they ask. Sometimes, it’s about holding the line - even when it hurts.

Setting clear boundaries doesn’t mean withholding love.
It means choosing accountability over enabling, clarity over chaos, and long-term healing over short-term relief.

Supporting someone in recovery is one of the hardest roles there is - but clear boundaries can be one of the most loving things you do.

Check out the full reel to learn more about helping versus enabling, and why real love requires boundaries.

Addiction affects all of our relationships, especially those with our kids. The degree to which the child is impacted really depends on each individual situation. One thing that remains true in almost all cases is that getting treatment is a critical step in building a healthy relationship with your children. Yes, it takes time. Recovery allows you to go slow, and really focus on the process of mending this precious relationship. 💫

✨ Detox starts the process. Recovery transforms it.

Explaining addiction to kids is hard - and with the holidays coming up, these conversations can feel even heavier.

When parents ask how to talk to young children about why mom or dad is in treatment, I always come back to the same guidance: be honest, be direct, and don’t underestimate what kids can understand.

One of the simplest ways I explain addiction is like an allergy.
Some people have a reaction to alcohol or drugs - once they start, they struggle to stop. Not because they don’t love their family, but because their brain is sick and needs treatment.

And when a parent goes to treatment, it’s not them “leaving.” It’s them getting their medicine. It’s them choosing to get well for themselves and for their family.

The holidays can make separation feel tougher. Kids notice when routines shift, when a parent isn’t home, when the season doesn’t look like it usually does.

But the truth is: the longer someone stays in treatment, the stronger their foundation for long-term recovery.

And when they come home, the work doesn’t just stop - they keep going to meetings, staying connected, and doing what they need to do to be the best parent they can be.

This season, remember: recovery is an act of love. ❤️ For themselves, and for their kids.
