On World Day of Social Justice, we are reminded of the challenges millions face, often through no fault of their own, in accessing basic necessities like housing, employment, healthcare, and education. As we reflect on these injustices, it's up to all of us to work together in creating a world where social justice is not just an ideal, but a reality for everyone.

In recognition of the 2026 Black History Month theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” we highlight Beverly Greene. Dr. Greene is known as the “Pioneer of Intersectional Psychology” and has taught many students about cultural diversity and mental health. She earned her master’s and doctorate degrees at Adelphi University and later worked as a staff psychologist at Kings County Municipal Hospital in Brooklyn in the Inpatient Child Psychiatry Division.

While working at Kings County Municipal Hospital, Dr. Greene was asked to teach her mostly white colleagues about important things to consider when helping their mostly Black patients. This led her to write about her experiences, which helped her begin a teaching career at St. John’s University. She still teaches about cultural diversity and how it connects to mental health at St. John’s today.

In recognition of the 2026 Black History Month’s theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” we highlight Francis Cecil Sumner, Ph.D. Dr. Francis Sumner, called the “Father of Black Psychology,” was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in the United States. He was interested in understanding racial bias and supporting educational justice.

While teaching at Howard University, Dr. Sumner helped start a psychology department and became its head. One of his biggest achievements was helping to guide and support the next generation of successful Black psychologists, like Kenneth Clark.

Today we celebrate Rosa Parks' birthday. Rosa Parks, known as the mother of Civil Rights, was born on February 4, 1913. In 1955, she helped start the Civil Rights Movement when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her act of courage led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was led by local leaders, including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The boycott lasted over a year and ended when the U.S. Supreme Court decided that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Rosa Parks became a symbol of strength and dignity in the fight against racial segregation.
