March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! 💙

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives, and early detection makes a huge difference. A colonoscopy is always the gold standard for screening, but there are other options that may work for some patients.

During the month of March, Guardant Health will be processing screening tests for commercially insured patients ages 45–85. This screening is a simple blood draw, making it an easy option for many patients. You may receive an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) from your insurance—this is not a bill and can be disregarded.

If you’ve been putting off your screening, butt seriously…get screened! Talk to your provider about which screening option is right for you.

Read Across America Week! 📚

We’re celebrating the joy of reading and the incredible impact it has on a child’s growth and development. In honor of Read Across America, we’re highlighting how important books are, not just at school, but right from the very beginning.

At Bluestem, we incorporate the importance of reading into every well-child visit. We are proud to be part of the Turn a Page. Touch a Mind.® program, which supplies age-appropriate books for distribution to our patients and emphasizes the critical role of reading to children. The program also highlights the powerful influence healthcare providers have in encouraging families to establish consistent daily reading habits at home.

Small but mighty crew this morning at Walk, Talk & Wellness with Dr. Doug!

Heart health was our focus as we wrap up American Heart Month, but Dr. Doug reminded us that taking care of your heart isn’t just a February goal. A healthy diet and regular exercise, the very best things you can do for your heart, should be a year-round commitment.

A big thank you to our Dietary Department for preparing some delicious heart-healthy snacks that everyone enjoyed! We hope to see you all at next month's Walk, Talk & Wellness with Dr. Doug!

When you’re fortunate to work alongside an incredible community supporter like Ray's Pharmacy & Q-Value, you truly see the difference teamwork makes.

These past few weeks have been incredibly busy with so much sickness in our community, and through it all, we’ve been in constant sync. We understand each other’s workflow, the urgency our patients are facing, and the importance of clear communication.

We know they are here for us and more importantly, for our patients. Their support, responsiveness, and dedication help ensure our community continues to receive the care it needs.

And today, they reminded us just how well they know us. Such a sweet gesture (literally!) that brightened our day because they obviously know we need a little sugar to survive these busy weeks.

We are so grateful for community allies like Ray’s Pharmacy who stand beside us every day.

Dr. Anna enjoyed speaking with Gove County high school students about life as a physician in rural Kansas during their tour for Kansas Virtual Career Fair Day!

She shared insights about caring for patients in a rural community, the rewards and challenges of practicing medicine close to home, and the many pathways available to students interested in health care careers.

Students also had a great time looking through the baby pictures on display and a few even spotted themselves! We love seeing those full-circle moments in our community.

Mia Briggs is a current senior at QHS and serves as our student intern through the Nex-Generation Student Internship Program. She will be heading to the University of Kansas next year to pursue pre-med, following in the footsteps of Annie Carlson, a fourth-year medical student.

We’re seeing numerous cases of Influenza in our community. Many people describe missing a full week of work or school, extreme fatigue, joint pain, headaches, high fevers, sore throat—and an overall feeling of being hit by a truck, especially if they have not had the flu vaccine.

To help prevent the spread:
• Wash your hands frequently
• Cover coughs and sneezes
• Stay home when you’re sick - yes it's hard to miss school, activites and work but it's the best decision for you and others!
• Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces
• Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated

Taking a few simple precautions can help protect you, your family, and our community.

Prior authorizations are frustrating for patients, time-consuming for care teams, and too often delay the care people need. In rural healthcare, those delays can be even more impactful when options are limited and access matters more than ever.

That’s why today, Dr. Doug is testifying on behalf of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians before the Senate Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance, sharing how prior authorization requirements affect patients, physicians, and rural communities across Kansas.

In small towns, timely care isn’t a convenience, it’s essential. We’re proud to see Dr. Doug advocating for solutions that reduce unnecessary barriers and help keep care local, accessible, and patient-focused.
