I will tell you in my first hand experience that my last hospice patient Mr Charlie struggled severely and unnecessarily because of his micromanagement of his medications for himself. He would not allow anyone to manage his medication for him until I came on the scene. It wasn't until the doctor prescribed his fentanyl patch that he was out of pain and that with morphine and other medications we were no longer chasing his pain his pain was being managed.
I will also say I've worked with hospice patients that have come off hospice services and have lived for a year to 2 years longer sometimes more I've heard through nurses.
But on the other hand I will tell you I've worked with people who have put off going on hospice services and in that snuggled unnecessarily with out the medications offered through hospice.
Don't live in fear. Allow those of us that have had years of experience in this field help you. You're not less of a person because you're surrendering to assistance in your last days this is actually an act of courage.
God bless 🙏
