Things to Know About Seasonal Depression
Seasonal depression—also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—is more than just “winter blues.” As the seasons change, many people experience real shifts in mood, energy, and motivation.
Here are five important things to know:
1️⃣ It’s not about willpower.
Seasonal depression is linked to changes in sunlight that affect serotonin, melatonin, and your internal clock. You can’t “snap out of it.”
2️⃣ It can show up as exhaustion, not just sadness.
Low energy, oversleeping, brain fog, and lack of motivation are common signs—even if you don’t feel “depressed” all the time.
3️⃣ It can affect anyone.
Adults, teens, caregivers, and professionals can all experience seasonal depression, even if they’ve never struggled before.
4️⃣ It often starts in fall or winter—but patterns matter.
If you notice mood changes around the same time each year, that’s important information to pay attention to.
5️⃣ Support helps—and you don’t have to wait it out.
Light therapy, movement, routine, and therapy can make a real difference. You don’t have to struggle through the season alone.
