Alliance Medical Ministry

Alliance Medical Ministry A nonprofit clinic that provides comprehensive primary care to working, uninsured community members.

AMM is a nonprofit medical clinic for working uninsured adults in Wake County between ages 18 and 64. The private practice model offers access to quality care at an affordable price. Without an alternative like Alliance, the uninsured must often rely on expensive emergency rooms for care that is not critical and does not ultimately meet their long-term needs.

Mackenzie is AMM's current Social Work Intern for the 2025-2026 academic year. She reports to Nick, our Director of Social Work Services. Not many free and charitable clinics have a social worker who is embedded in the clinic. Mackenzie is over halfway through her time with AMM, so we asked her some questions about Social Work and her experience at AMM.

Why did you choose Social Work?

"I chose social work because I grew up in a rural community with a significant shortage of resources and access to care. Witnessing these gaps firsthand inspired me to become an advocate for vulnerable populations. I developed a strong desire to help individuals and families navigate systemic barriers and access the support they need to improve their overall well-being."

Access to healthcare continues to be one of our community's biggest issues. Developing a workforce that has the ability to address both the medical and human needs of our communities' most vulnerable populations is a challenge we are committed to tackling. Our universities have to be at the forefront of this challenge.

We are honored that UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts will be our keynote speaker. Like the healthcare industry, Universities are navigating transformative changes. Chancellor Roberts is a strong leader and thoughtful speaker who will provide his insights on cultivating new community leaders that will make a positive impact on society.

March is National Kidney Month! Many AMM patients suffer from kidney disease due to diabetes and hypertension. Did you know that your kidneys play an important role in your overall health? Despite their modest size, these bean-shaped organs are critical for waste removal, fluid balance, and overall health maintenance. However, kidney disease often remains unrecognized because symptoms appear gradually over time. That is why National Kidney Awareness Month, in March, is such an essential time to learn more about kidney health, raise awareness of the dangers of renal disease, and explore prevention methods.
