Happy Black History Month!

“The history of Americans of Black African heritage is interwoven into and inseparable from the fabric of our country; it is American History, not a separate series of events; one would not exist without the other. It is amazing to look back at American History and see the incredible impact of unexpected heroes, including those in medicine and science, whether from poverty, or a minority ethnicity, or religion. When America embraces the truth of the origins of its collective genius, we can truly appreciate the blessings of unity and equality.”

-Dr. Edwin Burkett, AMM Medical Director

February is recognized as American Heart Month and is an opportunity to spread awareness regarding heart disease prevention. The United States commemorates the 62nd annual American Heart Month in February. President Lyndon B. Johnson, a heart attack survivor, originally declared this in 1964. The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women initiative will celebrate its 12th anniversary on National Wear Red Day in 2026. Wearing red on this day helps spread the word about heart disease and motivates people to lead healthy lives. Both initiatives help spread the message of heart disease prevention, as heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and men in America. One of the primary risk factors of heart disease is high blood pressure. High blood pressure puts nearly half of adults in America at risk for heart disease and stroke. Additional risk factors for heart disease include smoking, family history, age, diet, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, and poor sleep habits. At AMM, we strive to provide adequate care and education to all patients about heart disease risk and the importance of maintaining healthy habits.

AMM is incredibly proud of Ryan, who has been involved with AMM in many capacities. First, he was a volunteer at AMM, then a medical assistant, then went to medical school, and has since come back to AMM for one of his rotations as a 4th-year medical student at Campbell University.

"From medical assistant to medical student, my time with Alliance Medical Ministry has shaped how I will practice as a future Family Medicine physician. I have seen firsthand how an interdisciplinary care team that puts patients first and has a passion for the work they do can change individual and community health for the better. As I look forward to residency, I will strive to meet the high standard of holistic care that Alliance demonstrated at such an early point in my journey to be a physician, addressing the variety of factors that affect my patients’ health and empowering them to be their own advocates." -Ryan

Cold weather calls for warm drinks, and a cup of fresh herbal tea is a great way to warm up! For a Wellness Wednesday, AMM's gardener, Lauren, set up a hot herbal tea station in the lobby for patients. Patients were able to create their own herbal tea blends with ingredients grown in the AMM Garden.

In the garden, AMM grows the following herbs that can be used for tea:

-rosemary
-lavender
-chamomile
-hibiscus
-mint
-lemon balm
