If quitting w**d feels harder than you expected, the problem is not you. The problem is potency.

Today’s cannabis products look very different than they did a few decades ago. High-potency flower, concentrates, dabs, wax, and distillates can reach THC levels that overwhelm the brain’s natural balance, especially with daily use. Sleep disruption, irritability, anxiety spikes, appetite changes, and emotional volatility are now common symptoms when someone tries to quit.

Whippets, the nitrous oxide canisters sold at gas stations, smoke shops, and online, have surged in popularity through social media and party culture. Brands like Galaxy Gas have become part of a growing trend among teens and young adults looking for an accessible, quick high.

These products are anything but harmless. When inhaled, nitrous oxide cuts off oxygen to the brain and can cause asphyxiation, fainting, nerve damage, and serious neurological issues. Repeated use has been linked to vitamin B12 deficiency, brain and spinal cord damage, anemia, a weakened immune system, and long-term nerve injury that can lead to paralysis, and in some cases, death. Use during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects. The FDA has issued public warnings about the serious health risks associated with recreational nitrous oxide use.

What is easy to buy can become difficult to stop. If a weekend experiment has started turning into something more, call or text New Waters for confidential support. 919-670-8119

Most people who use kratom have no idea how much the marketplace has changed. Many of today’s “extra strength” or “enhanced” products now contain 7-OH, a concentrated compound that interacts with the brain’s opioid receptors far more intensely than the natural leaf.

Because of this, these products behave much more like opioids than herbal supplements. Tolerance can build quickly, doses often escalate, and withdrawal symptoms can closely resemble opioid withdrawal. If you suddenly feel like you cannot function without it, there is a physiological reason why.

New Waters Recovery offers medically monitored kratom detox to help stabilize the body, support the nervous system, and prepare clients for clear, informed decisions about their next steps.

Sobriety is not about settling for a smaller or quieter life. It is about building a wider, more vibrant one and uncovering parts of yourself that substances kept hidden.

In this episode of Finding New Waters, Momentum Co-Founder and CEO Rick Barney reflects on getting sober at eighteen and realizing how much of his world had revolved around drinking and drugs. Today, through Momentum Recovery, he helps young adults build lives that feel meaningful, connected, and genuinely fun without relying on substances.

Detox is not the time to hope everything goes smoothly. It is the time to be safe.

Inpatient detox gives clients a controlled environment, 24/7 medical support, emotional regulation, and space to stabilize without external stress.

Outpatient detox may work for mild cases, but it cannot replace the safety of a medical team at your side.

Early sobriety is fragile, especially between six and nine months, when growing confidence can quietly shift into complacency. Co-Founder and CEO Rick Barney explains how Momentum Recovery’s extended structure gives clients a soft place to land when life becomes more demanding and early stability is tested.

In this episode of Finding New Waters, Rick describes how Momentum’s campuses in Wilmington function as connected, intentional communities built to support young people through the hardest stretch of early recovery.

From pills and powders to flavored shots, kratom products are showing up everywhere. That visibility can make it seem harmless, but the active compounds in kratom act on the same receptors as opioids and can create dependence faster than most people expect.

The risk increases even more with concentrated extracts like 7-OH, which are commonly sold in smoke shops, gas stations, and online marketplaces.

If you’ve been experimenting with kratom and are worried you might be in over your head, call or text New Waters today for confidential consultation about your kratom use. 919-670-8119
