Birch Therapy in the Spotlight: Catch Us on CBS 17! 📺✨
We are so excited to share that Birch Therapy recently stepped in front of the cameras! Practice owner Jenn Birch and Parent Coach Laura Brimberry were thrilled to be interviewed by Trent Gilbreath for CBS 17’s My Carolina.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share our mission and the heart behind our services with the wider community. We are deeply committed to mental wellness in North Carolina, and being able to speak on a public platform about the support we provide to families and children is a true privilege.

A huge shout-out to Kathryn Burnett and Dakota Becker, who were willing to be filmed playing and conversing in our therapy spaces!

Thank you for being part of our journey. We are honored to support this community in its pursuit of mental wellness! Full news segment link in our linktree!

The “Rock Concert” of Therapy: Birch Team Returns from the 2026 Symposium! 🎸🧠
There is nothing better than growing and learning alongside your colleagues! Our very own Akeyah, Kathryn, Laura B., and Laura G. just returned from the clinical event of the year: the 2026 Psychotherapy Networker Symposium in Washington, D.C.

Think of it as the ultimate rock concert, but for therapists! The team spent the week learning from the “headliners” of mental health, including:
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris (Pioneer in ACEs and trauma-informed care)
Bessel van der Kolk (Author of The Body Keeps the Score)
Dr. Dan Siegel (Founder of Interpersonal Neurobiology and the “Hand Model of the Brain”)
It was an invaluable time to absorb new research, reflect on our practice, and bring back cutting-edge tools that will directly improve how we support the families and children in our community.

We are so proud of our team for staying at the forefront of the field, and we can’t wait to hear more about the specific “golden nuggets” they’ll be sharing in our next clinical consultation!

Meet Your Child’s “Inner Family” 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦✨
Did you know we all have an inner world filled with different “parts” or feelings? In child therapy, we call this an inner family.

Sometimes, kids (and adults!) try to push away “bad” feelings like anger or sadness. But when we dismiss or feel ashamed of those emotions, they actually tend to get louder. The goal of therapy isn’t to get rid of feelings—it’s to foster curiosity and acceptance so those big emotions don’t have to take the driver’s seat.

Featured Book of the Month: 📖 “Harper and Her Inner Family: Finding Balance Within”

This is a fantastic tool for kids up to age 12. It teaches them how to guide and manage their feelings with kindness, rather than letting “big emotions” take control. It’s the perfect conversation starter for your next bedtime story!

The Takeaway: All parts are welcome. When we listen to our “inner family” with curiosity instead of shame, we find balance. 🌿

Why Your Brain Loves a Dance Party 💃🧠
Did you know that hitting the dance floor is more than just a workout? Research shows dancing is a powerhouse for your mental health. Whether it’s a choreographed class or a 5-minute kitchen dance party with the family, moving to music provides a profound boost to your well-being.

What if you have “two left feet”? Your body doesn’t care! Movement is movement, and everyone has their own unique style.

Why it works:

Dancing forces you to step out of the “worry loop.” When you focus on rhythm, there simply isn’t room for rumination or negative self-talk. It’s a creative break that shifts your brain from stress to expression.

The Mental Health “Plusses”:

Mood Booster: Floods your system with endorphins to combat anxiety.
Brain Power: Keeps your mind sharp and supports memory.
Connection: Enhances social skills and reduces loneliness.
Confidence: Improves posture and self-esteem as you move.
The Physical Perk: You’re building heart health and flexibility—all while having fun! Next time you feel overwhelmed, turn up your favorite song and just move. Your brain (and your body) will thank you!! How Dancing Helps Your Mental Health source - verywellmind.com

Welcome Sydney Walton to the Birch Team! Sydney has been dedicated to clinical work since 2021, specializing in support for children, adolescents, and adults. She earned her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in 2022, following her undergraduate studies at Meredith College. Driven by a personal calling to help families thrive, Sydney serves as a principled agent of change, focusing on deep attunement and the unique design of every individual she treats.
With a heart for working with children and parents, Sydney offers a gentle, nurturing approach to therapy. She is highly experienced in facilitating Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), sand tray therapy, and creative expressive arts. Her clinical expertise covers a broad spectrum, including:
Neurodivergence & Developmental Support: ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and OCD.
Emotional Resilience: Navigating grief, anxiety, depression, and difficult life transitions.
Evidence-Based Frameworks: Integrating Person-Centered, Gestalt, CBT, and Mindfulness-based ACT.
Sydney also utilizes psychological assessments as a vital tool to gain a deeper understanding of a client’s needs. Believing that healing requires looking at the “whole person,” she thoughtfully addresses the social, spiritual, emotional, and physical components of self to create a truly tailored path towards wellness. Sydney will be seeing clients in both Raleigh and North Raleigh offices. Schedule a phone consult on our website to learn more about working with Sydney!

Spring is finally in the air! With longer days and warmer weather, we hope your spirits are lifting as we all “dust off” the winter funk. At Birch, we have so much to be excited about this season!

We are incredibly proud to announce that our own Jenn Birch has been named Best Mental Health Professional in the Wake Living 2026 Maggy Awards! Additionally, Jenn was recognized by the Triangle Business Journal as one of their Women in Business honorees for this year. We are deeply grateful for our community’s recognition of the heart and hard work we put into Birch every day.

This month is packed with parenting workshops! We love heading out into the community to provide tangible support and resources to families. It is an honor to partner with local schools and organizations to help parents navigate the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

Keep an eye out for us on the air! We will be interviewed by CBS this Friday for an upcoming segment. We will post the article and video link here and on our website as soon as it goes live.

All this to say—we are loving how this spring is starting, and we are so glad to have you on this journey with us.

As we bring this month of “love” to a close, we want to offer a gentle reminder: Take the time to give yourself the same love and attention you so freely give to others. For caregivers, therapists, and helpers, this is often the hardest task of all. We are so accustomed to looking outward to meet the needs of our families and clients that we can lose the signal of our own internal needs.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Alyson Holt, who led our staff through a gentle yoga and processing experience last night. It was a sacred window of time to simply breathe, listen to our bodies, and reconnect with one another through shared reflection.

Filling our own cups isn’t just a “luxury”—it is a crucial requirement for those of us in the business of supporting others. While it isn’t always easy to identify exactly what we need in a moment of stress, starting with a deep breath and a quiet moment of listening to your body is a powerful first step.

To the parents, the partners, and the providers: May you find a moment this week to be as kind to yourself as you are to the rest of the world.

Many people starting therapy ask: “Will my therapist truly understand my background? Are they familiar with my culture and racial identity?” These questions are more than valid—they are essential. While a therapist doesn’t always need to share your exact life history to provide help, cultural alignment often removes the invisible barriers to vulnerability and significantly accelerates the trust-building process.

We recognize the profound importance of this connection, particularly within the Black community. This Black History Month, we want to honor the strength of the Black families seeking mental health care and celebrate the expertise of the Black clinicians who walk alongside them. While access to mental health support has historically been limited, we are energized by the progress being made toward a more equitable field. We are committed to doing our part by providing culturally resonant, representative support that honors the lived experiences of every individual who walks through our doors.

💝We often think of Valentine’s Day in terms of flowers and chocolate, but for a teenager, the highest form of love is often much simpler: It’s the feeling of being truly understood.

When we practice “Deep Listening,” we aren’t just hearing words—we are telling our children, “Your feelings are valid, your perspective matters, and you are safe with me.” That sense of safety is the foundation of a loving relationship.

In our latest blog, Claudio Barrientos, LCSW, MBSR, explores how mindful communication can break the cycle of “shrugs and silence” and replace it with genuine connection.

Inside the blog, we dive into: ✔️ Why listening to understand is a radical act of love. ✔️ How to replace “fixing” with curiosity. ✔️ The “Side-by-Side” trick for lowering defenses.

Connection is a legacy. This month, let’s move past the “fix-it” mode and into a space of heart-centered listening.💕
