Happy Black History Month! We hope you’ve had a wonderful month of celebrating the rich history of Black people in not only America—where the month of celebration originated—but around the world. We’d like to highlight the work of Maude Callen, a South Carolina nurse and midwife that served the rural South for over 60 years. Callen gained national attention in Life magazine’s photo essay, “Nurse Midwife”, published in 1951.

She delivered over 600 babies and also instructed others on midwifery and cared for thousands of patients. After the publication of the Life piece, thousands of subscribers to the magazine across the country sent in donations. With these donations, more than $20,000 was raised and helped to build a clinic in Pineville, where Callen worked until her retirement in 1971.

Our founder, Nicole J. Wallace, LCMHC-QS, NCC, CCMHC, recently served as a featured speaker at the 2026 North Carolina Counseling Association Conference in Asheville, NC!

Alongside Whitney Gatling, LCMHS, Dr. Sharon Webb, LCMHC-S, NCC, and Dr. Kerri Legette, LCMHC, NCC, RN, Nicole presented on “Government Systems Under Stress: Trauma-Informed Counseling For Public Servants and First Responders.” This presentation addressed critical strategies for supporting those on the front lines of public service.

In addition to this presentation, we are proud to announce that Nicole is the president-elect for the Military Government Counseling Association-NC! We look forward to the continued impact of her leadership and expertise within the counseling community. North Carolina Counseling Association
