🩺 Why Does It Hurt More the Day AFTER Your Workout? Let's talk about cytokines—your body's healing messengers!
If you've ever wondered why that sore muscle or new exercise routine makes you feel worse on day two, cytokines are part of the answer.
What are cytokines?
Think of them as your body's construction crew foreman. When you exercise, stretch an injured muscle, or work through physical therapy, you create tiny micro-tears in your tissues (this is normal and actually how you get stronger!).
Cytokines are the chemical messengers your immune cells send out to coordinate the repair process.
Here's what's happening in your body:
When you move an injured area or push your muscles during PT:

🔧 Cytokines rush to the area and say "We need repairs here!"
🚧 They trigger inflammation (yes, inflammation can be GOOD—it brings healing cells and nutrients)
💪 They help recruit the crew to rebuild stronger tissue
✅ Once healing progresses, they signal everything to calm down

Why this matters for YOUR recovery:

Soreness is communication: That achy feeling? It's partly cytokines doing their job
Ice vs. Heat makes sense now: We time these based on what phase of cytokine activity you're in
Movement helps: Gentle exercise can optimize cytokine signaling and speed recovery
Rest matters too: Overdo it, and cytokines can create too much inflammation

The bottom line:
Your body has an incredibly sophisticated repair system. Our job in physical therapy is to work WITH your cytokines—creating the right amount of challenge to trigger healing without overwhelming your system.
That's why we carefully progress your exercises and why "some soreness" is okay, but "too much pain" means we need to adjust!

Your body moves in diagonal “slings.” The right gluteus maximus connects through the low back fascia to the left latissimus dorsi & shoulder.
👉 When your right glute is weak, your left shoulder has to pick up the slack—leading to pain, fatigue, or poor posture.
✅ Strengthen the chain:
Glute bridges & hip thrusts (right side focus)

🤔 Ever wonder why bad posture or muscle tension can keep your pain coming back?
It often comes down to something called the pain–spasm cycle:
1️⃣ Poor posture or muscle overuse reduces blood flow to the muscle.
2️⃣ This lack of circulation leads to tightness and irritation.
3️⃣ The body reacts with more muscle spasm to “protect” the area.
4️⃣ That spasm causes more pain… which triggers more spasm.
👉 And the cycle continues unless we break it with movement, stretching, and proper posture.
Think of it like your muscles getting “stuck in defense mode.”
The sooner you restore balance and mobility, the sooner you stop the cycle.

If your knees ache or your back feels stiff before it rains, you might be a "human barometer." And guess what? You're not imagining it!

Many older adults feel changes in their joints when the weather shifts — especially with arthritis or past injuries. Changes in barometric pressure can cause tissues to swell and press on nerves, leading to pain or stiffness.
