Juice is considered by many to be a healthy way to get fruit into your child's growing body. But here's the catch - it contains TONS of sugar and can be really damaging to teeth, especially when they are allowed to drink it throughout the day!

Children who sip juice throughout the day expose their teeth to constant sugar and acid, which is much worse than drinking a small glass at mealtime. Continuous exposure gives bacteria more opportunity to create decay-causing acids and can accelerate enamel erosion. Using a straw can reduce contact with teeth slightly, but it doesn’t eliminate the risk entirely.

Today is World Oral Health Day and the PERFECT day to begin limiting juice to 4–6 ounces per day (for children over 1) AND encourage drinking juice only at meal times.

Unintentional poisoning is a major concern for parents and caregivers. As part of Poison Prevention Week, we wanted to share four of the biggest poison concerns for children.

1. Medication - ensure all medication is stored up high and locked. Ask visitors to store medication in a place curious hands won't find, not the purse.

2. Cleaning supplies. Many of today's cleaning supplies look a lot like something fun to eat. Ensure all cleaning supplies are stored in a cabinet with a safety latch.

3. Personal care products. The items you frequently use, such as mouthwash, perfume, nail polish remover, and hand sanitizer, contain alcohol, which could cause low blood sugar, seizures, and coma in young children.

4. Small batteries. Button batteries and other small batteries can cause severe, fatal burns or holes in the esophagus within hours. Store them away from little hands.

If you suspect poisoning, act immediately. Call the Poison Help Hotline immediately at 1-800-222-1222.

It’s 3:17 AM. The clock is the only light in the room, and you’ve just searched 'why is my baby awake' for the fourth time this week. Maybe you’re watching your baby coo in the dark, or your toddler has decided bedtime isn’t important. Feeling exhausted and confused is completely normal, especially when sleep has become a one-step-forward-and-two-steps-back kind of scenario.

In this month's blog, we’ll explore why your child is awake and, more importantly, how you can help everyone get back to sleep. Read it here: https://f.mtr.cool/gjvuvuqkwr

Knowing when to wash hands is just as important as knowing how. Kids should scrub up before eating, after the bathroom, after blowing their nose, after playing outside, and anytime hands look or feel dirty. These small moments add up to big protection.

We want to share an important update regarding a recent measles exposure reported in Wake County. At this time, there are no reported cases of measles within our office. We are sharing this information proactively to keep our community informed, prepared, and healthy.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus, but it is also highly preventable. Here is the essential information for your family:

Prevention is Key
• The best protection against measles is the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine.
• Check Records: Please take a moment to review your child’s immunization status in our Patient Portal.
• Stay Current: Most children receive their first dose at 12–15 months and a second at 4–6 years. If your child has missed a dose, please call us to schedule a catch-up appointment.

Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure:
• High fever, cough, runny nose, and red/watery eyes.
• A characteristic red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body.

If your child develops these symptoms or if you believe they were at a specific exposure site:
• Call us immediately at 919-720-4876.
• Stay home. Please do not come directly to the clinic or an urgent care without calling first. This helps us coordinate a "curbside" or isolated evaluation to keep our other patients, especially infants too young to be vaccinated, safe.

Our Commitment
• We are closely monitoring the situation and following all guidance from the Wake County Health Department. Our office remains open and safe for regularly scheduled visits.

We are here to answer any questions and help you navigate this with peace of mind. Thank you for helping us keep all our families safe!

Who else remembers the rule: “Be home when the streetlights come on”?

For those of us who grew up in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, our weekends were defined by sun, dirt, and total freedom. We weren’t just "playing." We were building risk-assessment skills and independence that a screen simply can't provide.

Today, the average teen spends 9 hours a day on a device. It’s time to bridge the gap between our "analog" childhoods and their digital reality.

Challenge for tonight: Put the phones in a basket during dinner and tell your kids about your favorite childhood adventure. Then, ask them to plan an outdoor one with you for this weekend!
