The History and Background of CCI and the CVT Profession

For over 50 years, Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) has been a leader in the credentialing of cardiovascular professionals. In 1968, the National Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology (NSCPT) was formed. The NSCPT was a professional society that also administered credentialing examinations. NSCPT had a Board of Schools and an examination committee. At that time the credential was RCPT (Registered Cardiopulmonary Technologist).

In 1977, the first noninvasive (echo) examination was offered by the NSCPT in addition to the cardiac cath exam. Individuals earned the Registered Cardiovascular Technician (RCVT) credential. The next year the NSCPT divested itself of the credential and the National Board for Cardiopulmonary Credentialing (NBCPC) was formed.

1981 was when the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Medical Education (CME) officially recognized cardiovascular technology as an allied health profession. Then, in 1984 the National Alliance of Cardiovascular Technologist (NACT), and the American Cardiology Technologists Association (ACTA) joined to form the National Board of Cardiovascular Technology (NBCVT).

Timeline of events:

1988 – The NBCVT changed its name to….Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)! 1990 – RCVT was changed to designate specialty the exam was obtained in:

RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer

RCIS - Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist

RVS - Registered Vascular Specialist

2003 – CCI relocates headquarters to Raleigh, NC and the transition from a paper/pencil tests to Computer Based Testing (CBT) with Pearson VUE is completed.

2007 – CCI launches the Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) credentialing program. The RCES program is the first single-examination format for a CCI Registry Level Examination

2008 - CCI’s RCES, RCIS, RCS and RVS credentialing programs become ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 accredited.

2009 – CCI launches the Registered Phlebology Sonographer (RPhS) credentialing program and the Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) credentialing program.

2010 – CCI begins transition to single-part credentialing program for the RCS, RCIS, and RVS credentialing programs. CCI also launches the Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (CRAT) credentialing program.

2011 - CCI’s remaining exams CCT, CRAT, RCES, RCCS, and RPhS earned ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation.

2015 - CCI launches the first advanced level sonography exam, the Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) examination.

Currently CCI is governed by a Board of Trustees who are advised by a Board of Advisors. The Executive Committee consists of a President, President-Elect/Executive Exam Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Immediate Past President. The Board of Trustees shall supervise and manage the business affairs and property of the Corporation and shall exercise only such powers and perform such duties as may be described by the Articles of Incorporation or by the ByLaws. The Advisory Board shall advise the Board of Trustees and Executive Director on matters brought forth to the Advisory Board by the Board of Trustees and / or Executive Director.
