Chronic non-specific neck pain is the most common form of neck pain. While the inclusion of the word “non-specific” implies the cause of neck pain is unknown, the term really describes neck pain without an underlying disease or pathology—like an infection or osteoporotic fracture. Thus, chronic non-specific neck pain is better understood as neck pain arising from postural or mechanical causes of the neck that has persisted for at least three months.

Whiplash associated disorder (WAD) has been known to affect nerve function, which can manifest as several symptoms, including visual problems. If the initial chiropractic examination reveals altered ocular function, the patient’s chiropractor may recommend a variety of eye-specific exercises to aid in the healing process.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral neuropathy of the upper extremity. It can arise from many causes (sometimes more than one at the same time) such as anatomical variations, ganglion cysts, occupational mechanical stress, and systemic diseases including obesity, drug toxicity, alcoholism, diabetes, hypothyroid, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), etc. Let’s discuss how a doctor of chiropractic diagnoses CTS.

Statistically, low back pain is a condition that will affect nearly 90% of people, and it’s both a leading cause of disability and the primary reason patients visit a chiropractor. In addition to manual therapies provided in the office (like spinal manipulation), chronic low back pain patients are generally advised to stay or become more active. This not only aids in the recovery process but can also help reduce the risk of back pain recurrence. Can taking daily walks accomplish this or is a more comprehensive exercise routine required?

While there’s an abundance of published work on whiplash associated disorders (WAD), one of the most perplexing issues facing investigators is why nearly half of patients experience long-term, chronic issues. However, new research suggests that we may be closer to determining why this is the case and which patients may be at greatest risk so a more comprehensive treatment approach can be provided.

For men, chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is defined as ongoing or repetitive pain episodes in the pelvic region in the absence of urinary tract infection or other relevant pathology, such as prostatitis. Because the condition is complex and satisfactory results seldom occur from just one form of treatment, researchers have proposed tackling CPPS with a multimodal approach that may include manual therapies, a form of treatment provided by doctors of chiropractic.

The rapid acceleration/deceleration of the head and neck that occurs during a whiplash event can injure the various soft tissues of the head and neck, leading to a cluster of symptoms referred to as whiplash associated disorders (WAD). While features of WAD like neck pain and headache are well known, there are other symptoms that are often overlooked, including problems with swallowing or dysphagia.

Not only can osteoarthritis of the hip be painful, but it can reduce the range of motion of the joint, making it difficult to move around. Most patients seek to avoid or delay surgery as much as possible, which drives many to seek chiropractic care. The question is: what can a doctor of chiropractic do to manage osteoarthritis of the hip?

Each year, surgeons perform hundreds of thousands of total hip arthroplasties (hip replacements), and the most common reason is osteoarthritis of the hip. This condition isn’t caused by an underlying disease, rather it’s

In addition to manual therapies and other treatments provided in a chiropractic office, patients with chronic low back pain are often advised to exercise—specifically the core muscles—as part of the recovery process. Is there a protocol that’s best for engaging the core muscles?

The shoulder is a complex structure that consists of four joints that work together to allow for a large range of motion. Unfortunately, this flexibility results in instability and an elevated risk for injury. Perhaps the well-known shoulder injury is a rotator cuff tear, which will affect at least one-in-five persons during their lifetime. While some patients can recall a specific event that led to their injury, most rotator cuff tears occur over time and may even be present in the absence of symptoms. So, should an individual with a rotator cuff tear consult with a surgeon or explore non-surgical approaches first?

It’s estimated that up to 50% of whiplash associated disorders (WAD) patients will continue to experience long-term symptoms that interfere with their ability to carry out activities of daily living. According to experts, the economic burden associated with chronic WAD may exceed $42 billion each year. As such, many studies have sought to better understand whiplash, both from the mechanisms of injury to why some patients recover and some don’t.

According to a systematic review that included 201 studies, low back pain may affect between 10-67% of athletes at any given moment, with anywhere from 17-94% experiencing sports-related back pain each year. This broad range is due to the age, level of competition, and the specific sports included in each study. For example, the data show the risk for low back pain is higher in gymnastics, diving, weightlifting, golfing, football, and rowing. That said, what can be done to lower the risk for sports-related back pain?
