Gua sha is an ancient body treatment that originated in Asia. The term GUA literally means "scape," and SHA refers to the removal of metabolic waste trapped inside the body. The red marks seen here (referred to as "sha" in this practice) are commonly known as "petechiae" these days, and they are a visual representation of blood coming towards the surface. Don't worry! These are not bruises as the capillaries will remain unbroken if applied by a trained professional. If chronic problems are present, then the sha will show as deep purple/dark marks. Dark red colors like these often point to stagnant blood and an excess of heat within these tissues. Blood stagnation is known to be the cause of a variety of problems including: inflammation, pain, and GI upset.

By applying quick, scraping movement on specific regions of the body practitioners are inviting blood and lymph to flow freely and promote homeostasis (or "balance") within the body.

One of the classes I took recently was on a technique called “gua sha.” This type of treatment has been used in Asian countries for thousands of years and is used to treat muscle tension, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and can help clients relax. To learn more about this intense and incredible therapy, check out this article I found.

Although scientific study on gua sha is limited, the practice is traditionally used to help promote circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain.
