Resident Pete Benda created this acrylic painting of North Carolina musician Nina Simone in honor of Black History Month (celebrated annually in February in the US). Nina was a small-town prodigy on the piano who blossomed into a worldwide icon with her blend of jazz, blues, and activism.
Pete and his wife Judy were introduced to Simone’s work at an early age when she performed at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. Much later, he was part of her large outdoor audience in Sao Paulo while on business in Brazil.
Pete says, “From my roots in an all-white suburb of Chicago, I have grown to know and appreciate the wide range of African-American contributions to our country and our way of life—not just in music, acting, and sports but also science, business, religion, and civil rights.”
In addition to 44 years with IBM in the roles of engineering, sales, and marketing management, Pete served as an Adjunct Professor at Fisk University (an HBCU) in Nashville more than 50 years ago.
Thank you, Pete, for sharing your talents and for drawing our attention to this extremely talented artist! If you’re not familiar with Nina Simone, do an internet search for her cover of the song “Feeling Good.”
