December is Pear Month, and we're here to make sure they don't get lost in the holiday shuffle! With all the focus on apple and pumpkin-flavored things, pears also deserve a moment to shine. Pears are a good source of soluble fiber, which promotes digestive health and is linked to cholesterol-lowering health benefits. Even though pears have some natural fruit sugar, their high fiber and antioxidant profile make them a blood sugar- carbohydrate-friendly pairing.

To identify when a pear is ripe and ready to eat, apply gentle pressure at the stem; it should give slightly, indicating a soft texture (for European varieties like Bartlett, Bosc, and D'Anjou). Asian pears maintain a more crisp, firm flesh similar to that of an apple. If a pear smells sweet, this is a good indication it's ready to enjoy! A ripe pear is perfect for snacking or serving on yogurt, oats, or in salads.
