Hey Clinic

Hey Clinic Dr. Lloyd Hey is a scoliosis surgeon who has been helping children, adolescents, and adults with spine conditions for over twenty years!

Although we focus primarily on children and young adults with spinal deformity, the Hey Clinic serves patients of every stage of life, providing quality, compassionate care that exceeds expectations. Through personalized attention, generous appointment times, and strong emphasis on patient education, Dr. Hey’s approach takes into consideration a patient’s physical, emotional and social needs. Dr. Hey and his caring team work closely with each patient, family and local physician, to develop a plan customized to his/her needs while also taking into account the patient’s physical, emotional and social needs. Through our custom information system, we build a comprehensive database with all of our patients’ images and create immediate documentation geared to better serve each patient. At the Hey Clinic, we are committed to treating you, not just you or your loved one’s spine. By embracing a comprehensive approach to healing, our team fosters sincere relationships with our patients, creating the best possible experience. Dr. Hey aspired to be a surgeon following his own experience as a trauma patient during his adolescent years. His residency and training includes MIT, Harvard Medical School, and Boston Children’s Hospital. In 2005, after serving on faculty for Duke University Medical Center for nearly ten years, Dr. Hey founded the Hey Clinic for scoliosis and spinal deformities.

The Wall of Compassion: Mentoring the Next Generation of Medical Leaders
At the Hey Clinic, we believe that treating a patient goes far beyond a diagnosis—it’s about seeing every individual as precious. In this video, we take a walk down our "Wall of Compassion," a tribute to the incredible team and the unique mentorship program that defines our practice.

Inside this video:

A Team Approach: Meet our dedicated mid-level providers and our expert Schroth therapists, who work together to provide comprehensive care.

The Mentorship Program: Learn about our "apprenticeship" model for gap-year students. We take pride in mentoring future doctors and PAs before they head off to top-tier medical schools (like UNC!).

The "Wall of Compassion": See the faces of the many professionals who have trained here and are now bringing the "Good Samaritan" ethos to the wider medical field.

What to Expect: When you walk through our doors, you aren't just a number. You are greeted by high-achieving, compassionate individuals who are dedicated to your well-being.

Our goal is to leave a legacy of kindness in medicine. Whether they are current staff or alumni of our program, every person on this wall is committed to treating you with the excellence and compassion you deserve.

What you’ll learn in this video:

A Different Kind of Exam Room: See how our rooms are designed for patient education, featuring big screens for X-ray reviews and dedicated space for families to get their questions answered.

Non-Surgical Success: Watch the dramatic improvements possible through Schroth exercises, featuring a 10-year-old boy’s kyphosis correction and a significant scoliosis curve reduction.

Surgical Milestones: We share stories of patients reclaiming their lives—from a teenage gymnast and a roller derby athlete to a 74-year-old grandmother regaining her independence.

The "5 at 5" Rule: Learn a simple way to screen your child for scoliosis at home using nothing but your smartphone.

The "5 at 5" Home Test 📱

Start Screening: Begin checking your child around age 5.

Use Your Phone: Open the "Level" or "Measure" app on your smartphone.

Check the Angle: Place the phone on your child's back as they lean forward.

The Rule: If the Angle of Trunk Rotation (ATR) is 5 degrees or more, it would be a good idea to get an X-ray.

At the Hey Clinic, we provide lifelong care for every generation. Whether you are a concerned parent or an adult dealing with spinal curvature, we are here to help you stand straight and live life to the fullest.

Meet Whitney!

Whitney’s scoliosis measured 44° and her kyphosis measured 58°.

Whitney shared her beautiful photos and story! 🤍

“When I was in middle school, I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis during my annual physical exam. The doctor just told me to keep a check on it and monitor for progression. The following summer, I attended church camp with my youth group. The camp director gave his testimony during chapel one day and he spoke about an amazing doctor who had performed his surgery to repair his severe scoliosis by the name of Dr. Hey! Shortly after returning home from camp, I scheduled an appointment to see Dr. Hey. From the second I walked into his office, I felt a calming presence from the Lord and I knew that He had brought me here for a reason! I continued seeing Dr. Hey throughout high school and my first year of college and as my curve progressed more and more, he said to me, “if you were my daughter, I’d advise you to go ahead with the surgery.” I knew it was time and I felt certain that God placed me in the right hands of Dr. Hey! On September 14th, 2015, he performed surgery to correct my 44 degree scoliosis and my 58 degree kyphosis. As a 19 year old college student, I was beyond nervous for this day but Dr. Hey made me feel safe and secure. He prayed with me before surgery and was there with me every step of the way even throughout recovery, both in and out of the hospital. Life since surgery has been amazing - I now have an amazing daughter and am completely pain free! My scar means the world to me and is a symbol of my living testimony. I continue to show off my scar and share my testimony of what God did for me through Dr. Hey and the Hey Clinic! I will forever be grateful for Dr. Hey and his amazing team at the Hey Clinic!“ - Whitney
